Out of the Archives: In the 1960s, many geological test borings were made to plan the future path of City Water Tunnel No. 3, including from a drill barge on the East River between Queens and Roosevelt Island. The drill extracted rock samples, providing a cross-section of subsurface conditions to help engineers determine whether the area was suitable for tunneling and which construction methods to use.
