Members of NYISO’s Demand Forecasting, IT, and Operations Products teams recently visited the New York State Mesonet for a behind-the-scenes look at the operations room, weather station, and real-time weather sphere. A statewide weather network, the New York State Mesonet consists of 127 weather stations, with at least one station in each of New York’s 62 counties. The visit gave the team an opportunity to learn more about how Mesonet data can support NYISO’s work to enhance renewable energy forecasting and grid reliability.

💡 Did you know? New York is the birthplace of the modern electric grid. In 1882, the nation’s first commercial power plant began operating in Lower Manhattan, when Thomas Edison’s Pearl Street Station switched on electric service for homes and businesses. That pioneering station proved that electricity could be generated centrally and delivered reliably, laying the foundation for the interconnected power systems we depend on today. #GridFactFriday

Here at NYISO, we do more than keep the lights on. Our purpose has three parts. Keep electricity supply and demand in balance at all times. Grid operators track power flows, voltage levels, and system frequency 24/7/365. Administer fair, open, and competitive electricity markets. Markets ensure that the most efficient resources are used first and encourage investment in new technologies and cleaner energy sources. Planning a reliable, cleaner grid of the future. Our planning team assesses short and long-term reliability needs and integrates new technologies like offshore wind and battery storage. We’re proud to support United Way of the Greater Capital Region and the important work it does every day. This effort was powered by individual contributions from our employees and the unwavering dedication of campaign leader Carin Lane.
An extraordinary gift from our partners at NYISO! Thank you for investing in a stronger, healthier, and more financially stable Capital Region. Every last dollar of their generous contribution - $92,683.42 - stays right here in our local community. Their gift helps more kids succeed in school, provides nutritious meals to families, and creates opportunities for financial stability for our neighbors. A special thank you to United Way board member Rich Dewey and the entire NYISO team for their continued support and commitment to building a stronger community for all.
