The spring semester is back underway and we're glad it is so we can resume our series introducing our amazing seniors! Today, we'd love for you to get to know Vaishnavi Bhat, who is in the home stretch in the Zachry Leadership Program (ZLP) and the Department of Engineering Technology & Industrial Distribution at Texas A&M University. An outstanding engineering student, she also loves making music on instruments including the piano, ukulele, and violin. She also loves videography, photography, scrapbooking, and writing! In addition to ZLP, Vaishnavi has been involved in the Student Engineers' Council at Texas A&M University, MSC Aggie Leaders of Tomorrow, and the MSC Spencer Leadership Conference, while also working part-time in her department. Talk about a work ethic! She says her time in the Student Engineers' Council has been particularly impactful for her because it's given her a platform to practice the leadership and teamwork skills she's learned in ZLP in a meaningful way. She previously helped organize the Engineering Career Fair, the largest student-run career fair in the nation, and she currently serves as the Marketing Chair, where she gets to exercise the creativity we worked on back in semester 3 of ZLP. She also treasures the time she had in the MSC organizations because showed her the value of mentorship and taught her much about leadership! When I asked her to describe her leadership style, Vaishnavi wrote, "I always lead with empathy. Something that I took from my first internship was how impactful small acts of kindness and understanding can truly be. I remember my mentor telling me ‘you never know what someone is going through outside the workplace,’ so I always try to check in, ask questions, and extend support as much as possible. I also find it incredibly important to have a flexible form of leadership and an adaptable mindset, since every individual and situation is unique and can bring about challenges that need to be addressed in a new manner. From my time as an Editor in Chief for my high school’s magazine, I also learned the importance of leading from behind. Rather than telling people what to do, I find fulfillment in helping find people’s spark and then further empowering them to take the next steps in following through with their ideas. I love helping people find confidence in themselves and their work!" Vaishnavi loves her major--Industrial Distribution--because it's the perfect blend of business and engineering. She sees engineering as a dynamic, driving force behind innovation, and sees its application all around her. Vaishnavi tells me she learned so much about distribution and the global supply chain during her internships with American Omni Trading (AOT) and Burns & McDonnell. Next up for her is a full-time role at Opportune in Houston! Great job, Vaishnavi!
