How many products can you get out of one coconut? 🥥 That’s a challenge YPPS, Oxfam’s partner in East Flores, Indonesia, is tackling through its Sekolah Kelapa (coconut schools) program. Through YPPS’s training, participants have learned to transform coconuts into sustainable products and sources of renewable energy, including organic fertilizer and even fuel. “Where we work, the impacts of climate change are being felt more strongly,” said Magdalena Rianghepat, project manager at YPPS. “What we’re aiming for is not simply copra production, or money. It’s about reducing the usage of nonrenewable energy.” Learn more about YPPS‘s vision for a future of turning food waste into fuel and building sustainable eco-communities. https://lnkd.in/epRr-V2a

Years of war and aid cuts have “deepened a humanitarian crisis of staggering scale" in the DRC, weakening surveillance systems that should have detected this outbreak weeks earlier. More from Dr. Manenji Mangudu, Oxfam's DRC country director on this: https://lnkd.in/eXXnaV7a

The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Oxfam’s DRC Country Director Dr. Manenji Mangundu shares urgent updates regarding the new and quickly spreading Ebola outbreak in the DRC’s Ituri province. “This outbreak is hitting a country already stretched to breaking point. Ongoing conflict and years of aid cuts have deepened a humanitarian crisis of staggering scale: One in four people are going hungry. Those same aid cuts left DRC behind on its response to Ebola, weakening the surveillance systems that should have detected this outbreak weeks earlier,” shares Dr. Mangundu. Oxfam and our partners are mounting a response, but this crisis is unfolding at a time when resources are critically low, due to ongoing humanitarian aid cuts. As needs grow, there’s no time to waste. Help us provide critical resources. Donate now to help save lives in the DRC. https://bit.ly/4dBRdiH

After reckless cuts to U.S aid, we welcome the reported additional funding to be announced today for humanitarian assistance, which so many have pushed hard to restore. But how it is distributed is vital - it must be based on need, not politics. https://lnkd.in/exiGbbjT

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating and recognizing mothers like Angela Chiyala, a mother of five in southern Zambia who led her community out of hunger, one harvest at a time. After joining a local Farmer Field School, one of more than 30 schools across the western and southern provinces of Zambia that are supported by Oxfam and its partners, Angela learned climate-smart agriculture, financial management, and community leadership. Within a year, her peers elected her vice chair of the Farmer Field School and today, she leads a group of 40 farmers, bridging generational and gender divides to drive lasting change in her community. Happy Mother’s Day to every mother planting seed of change 🌱 Read Angela’s full story and learn how Oxfam’s programs are building a more just and sustainable world: https://bit.ly/49kGvvw

Oxfam America has never taken a position on the Pentagon budget – until now. I'm writing in The Hill to make the case that this year is different. As an organization dedicated to fighting inequality, it’s been difficult for Oxfam to watch military spending grow by nearly 200% over the past quarter century while the social safety net for poor and middle class families is shredded. Still, as humanitarians, we exercised restraint. It’s generally not our place to assess what governments need to keep their people safe. But that restraint becomes untenable when a massive spending increase coincides with a turn toward an aggressive use of the military unconstrained by international or domestic law. Following unlawful attacks against Venezuela and Iran, the commission of murder on the Caribbean Sea, and the issuance of casual threats against Greenland, Mexico, and Panama, among others, we can’t view this budget request as business as usual. This is not a defense budget, this is a war budget. And Congress needs to say no. https://lnkd.in/eDEyvci2
