Rakhma’s model has always been rare. Residential memory care itself is still more uncommon in the U.S. than it is overseas, and residential providers that do not limit the number of residents on Medicaid waivers are even rarer. But today, as we face an unprecedented aging boom, there is a new challenge in our state making models like Rakhma’s even more vulnerable. In the past 12 months, Minnesota added a staggering 500+ new assisted living memory care beds. Yet among memory care homes Rakhma’s size, 15 beds or fewer, only four new beds were created statewide. Four. These small homes, which provide the intimacy and familiarity that people with dementia need most, are disappearing because new regulations have made them financially out of reach to build and costly to sustain. This is the gap we are up against: a gap between what people deserve and what the system finds convenient to regulate. And this is the gap that you - our supporters - help us bridge. You are the reason this model still exists and the reason families on government assistance have a real home to turn to instead of an institution.
