In a new documentary with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Retro CEO "Joe Betts-LaCroix" shares Retro’s mission of adding 10 healthy years to the human lifespan. He explains the science behind that goal to reporter Dr Norman Swan, including Retro's work on autophagy, the process cells use to clear out damaged material as they age. That program is now in a Phase 1 clinical trial for Alzheimer’s disease. Watch the full documentary: https://lnkd.in/gq7QN7z2

Last week, Joe joined Nir Barzilai and CNBC's Diana Olick at the CNBC CEO Council Summit to discuss why aging is not just inevitable wear and tear, what treating health instead of disease actually means, and how the longevity field is building real scientific credibility. Recently, our CEO sat down with Julian Issa of The Beyond Tomorrow Podcast to talk about using AI to engineer better proteins, why going upstream to treat Alzheimer's changes the calculus, and why biological timescales are the one constraint no technology can shortcut. Retro Biosciences, the longevity startup backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has raised more money at a $1.8 billion valuation, it announced Friday. CEO "Joe Betts-LaCroix" teased that a first close of the financing round was coming while on stage with me at STAT's Breakthrough Summit West this week. A startup that has just started its first clinical trial generally wouldn’t warrant a multibillion-dollar valuation, Betts-LaCriox said during the event. But, he said, longevity research has gone through an “Overton window” shift, moving from a field seen as being on the fringe to one rich with disease targets. What do you think about the longevity and aging fields? Today we're announcing the initial close of our next financing round at a $1.8B pre-money valuation. In three years, we went from first lab to clinical candidate. RTR242 is in Phase I, with more first-in-human milestones planned for 2026 and 2027. Deep thanks to our investors, collaborators, and team. The progress we've made is a reflection of the people who believed this was possible.
