As freezing temperatures impact communities nationwide, The Salvation Army is mobilizing to protect vulnerable individuals and families from life-threatening cold. Our emergency winter response includes opening warming centers, expanding shelter capacity, serving hot meals, and providing cold weather gear alongside compassionate care. Diego dreamed of a better life, but instead, he was trapped in labor trafficking. At 40, he left Latin America for Norway, lured by promises of stable work and security. Instead, his wages were stolen, he worked exhausting hours, and threats kept him silent. After a chance encounter with police, Diego escaped and found refuge at The Salvation Army’s Filemon Safe House. There, he received counseling, practical support, and daily work experience—slowly regaining his independence and hope. But Diego’s journey isn’t over. Kaira’s story shows what’s possible when people care. After surviving modern slavery in the UK, Kaira longed to return home to the Philippines and start over.
