Last month we hosted our 22nd Annual Schuff Steel Charity Golf Classic benefiting Desert Voices! ⛳🏌️ Desert Voices Oral Learning Center is an Arizona non-profit organization that’s dedicated to teaching deaf or hard of hearing children the listening and spoken language skills they need to speak with confidence. Schuff Steel was introduced to Desert Voices back in 2002, when an employee’s daughter enrolled in the organization. After seeing the tremendous impact that Desert Voices had in her life, Schuff got involved. Over the years, Schuff Steel has helped to raise over $2 million to support and impact the lives of many children, ensuring they won’t have limitations because of hearing loss. With help from sponsors, golfers, and volunteers we were able to raise a record breaking $420,220 this year! Bridge mode on! 🌉 Last month, Schuff Steel was proud to sponsor student engineers from Utah Valley University in the Student Steel Bridge Competition! This competition is part of the American Institute of Steel Construction's University Programs in conjunction with the American Society of Civil Engineers, challenging teams to design and build a bridge spanning approximately 20 feet and capable of carrying 2,500 pounds. 🔧💪 This challenge gave the students the chance to apply what they've learned in the classroom to a real-world engineering challenge. The Schuff-sponsored team took fourth place in regionals, which were held at the University of Utah campus. Supporting the next generation of engineers is something we're passionate about, and moments like this remind us why. 🏗️👷 Introducing Jeffrey Krieg, AKA "Red Dog," a Maintenance Mechanic at Schuff Steel and a true living legend of the craft! With 45 years at Schuff Steel, Jeffrey embodies everything our 50th Anniversary celebration is about: dedication, craftsmanship, and taking pride in the work. Jeffrey has done it all at Schuff Steel. Starting as a general laborer, he worked his way through welder, welder/fitter, and team leader before landing in his current role keeping our welding machines and cranes running. There truly is never a dull moment. 🏆 Some of his most memorable projects: Jeffrey's hands have helped build some of Schuff Steel's most iconic structures. The MGM Grand, the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, and Chase Field (formerly Bank One Ballpark) to name a few. At Chase Field, his team fabricated massive trusses that to this day remain one of the most impressive feats of steel fabrication he's been a part of. As Jeffrey puts it, 'It's still standing, welded with my own hands.' 💡What keeps him coming back? You can't do what we do at Schuff Steel anywhere else. For Jeffrey, it has always been about the craft and taking real pride in the work, building things that stand the test of time. 🔩 Advice for those just starting out: "Come here, dig in, and actually learn the trade. Take pride in what you're doing. Don't just make it a paycheck." 🪡 Outside of work: When he's not on the shop floor, Jeffrey is working with his hands in a different way, doing upholstery on everything from couches to cars, and spending time camping and fishing. In honor of celebrating our 50th anniversary here at Schuff Steel, we will be highlighting some of our historic projects throughout the year. To kick it off, we are excited to share our very first project, the ASU Sun Devil Stadium Upper Deck Expansion! 🏗️ In 1976, we were awarded the structural steel erection scope for this addition which increased the capacity by over 12,000 seats. We erected around 500 tons of steel led by our founder, Dave Schuff, alongside Mardian Construction to complete this project in 1977. 🏟️ The impact from their hard work still stands today, celebrated by every Sun Devil and guest that walks into the stadium. At the first game following the expansion, the Sun Devils won 42 – 30! Recently, our Stockton team attended a Healthy Conflict Training event hosted by I.M.P.A.C.T. alongside teammates from our Pacific Northwest, Utah, and San Diego offices. The session was designed to shift perspectives on conflict, emphasizing critical elements for team cohesiveness, team development, customer management, and individual personal growth. The best part… the Stockton team became the first team ever to complete the building challenge! 🎉 It was competitive, a ton of fun, and a moment we're really proud of. 🏗️👷 Introducing Hobby Nelson, our Shop Trainer and Team Leader at Schuff Steel, a passionate builder and dedicated mentor who has spent 32 years helping make Schuff Steel what it is today, and whose decades of steel fabrication experience are shaping the next generation of craftsmen on our shop floor! Hobby works at our Phoenix shop, Schuff’s very first fabrication shop, and he is exactly the kind of person who represents the heart and soul of our company as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. 🔧📋 As a Shop Trainer and Team Leader, Hobby leads classroom training programs that cover everything from industry processes, sequencing, bundling, and tracking, all the way to the most important thing: safety. Then he takes it to the floor, where he draws on years of hands-on fabrication experience to show new team members exactly how it's done. 🔧 What he loves most about his job: It's a passion, plain and simple. Hobby has always loved building things and at Schuff Steel, he gets to do that every single day while passing that same love for the craft on to others. Here at Schuff, some of what we do is experimental by nature. We figure it out as we go, and we always build to code, no shortcuts. When you walk away from it, you're proud of it. 🏆 Some of his favorite Schuff projects: Hobby's resume speaks for itself, including the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, a 50-story replica of the Parisian landmark; the Wilshire Grand Center, the tallest building on the West Coast; the Loma Linda University Medical Center, a 2.5-year mega project located in a seismic region; and Chase Field with its retractable roof, just to name a few. 🏙️🏗️ 💡 What keeps him motivated? The pride that comes from doing things the right way. Every project, every beam, every column, built to last and built to code. That sense of craftsmanship and purpose is what gets him going every day. 🔩 Advice for those just starting out: "Give 100% and you're going to go somewhere. Show up, show like you care, and have a positive attitude, because attitude is everything in life." 🎣 Outside of work: When he's not on our shop floor, Hobby is out in nature, fishing every Monday and hunting with his son on the weekends. Both of his kids are hugely successful, and he's rightfully proud of the family he's built alongside the steel structures that define his career. 🦌🎣 Thank you, Hobby, for your 32 years of dedication to Schuff Steel and the investment you make in every person who comes through your classroom. 🏆 Exciting news! We are proud to announce that Schuff Steel’s Fab 52 Project Eagle has been named Engineering News-Record's Project of the Year and Excellence in Safety at the national level! This recognition follows our regional wins for Best Project Manufacturing and Excellence in Safety, and these wins belong to every person on the Schuff team who helped make this build possible. Our scope included procurement, detailing, fabrication, and erection of over 11,000 tons of multiple complex steel structures across the site including the EGEN trestle, UPW structure, MEPCON steel systems, and more. A unique challenge during this project was adding major MEPCON steel after the primary structure was already erected. This required our crew to work safely around installed equipment, perform complex steel erection after turnover to follow-on trades, and protect sensitive systems while executing welding and installation. Last week, our Eloy shop in Arizona had the pleasure of hosting 9 welding students and 3 instructors from Northland Pioneer College (NPC) for a shop tour. The group was traveling to Casa Grande to compete in the SkillsUSA State Welding Competition and made a stop with us along the way. A big thank you to our Eloy team for making it happen.
