A place for everyone to turn on the science: inspire learning, inform policy, and improve lives.
About us
We’re here to turn on the science. Through education, in-person experiences, online learning, traveling exhibits, and community partnerships, the Science Museum of Minnesota is dedicated to collaborating with our community to create a world where everyone has the power to use science to make lives better. With the help of our visitors, volunteers, staff, and community partners, we’re using science to figure out how our world works. Between our interactive exhibits, collection with over two million objects, and continuous scientific research, we believe there’s always something new to discover.

The Prairie Island Indian Community held ceremonies to rebury the remains of 59 people and nearly 500 sacred items that had been held for decades by the Science Museum of Minnesota and the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (which stored them at Hamline University). The repatriation was facilitated through collaboration between tribal nations, the Science Museum, MN Indian Affairs Council, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, MSU Mankato researchers, and neighboring Dakota communities. MPR's Melissa Olson covered the proceedings: https://bit.ly/4nudYbu

We've been hard at work creating short films showcasing some of the most important environmental projects in our state. Grab some popcorn (and your mosquito net!) and discover how the Superior Hiking Trail Association keeps Minnesota’s “crown jewel” wild and accessible—uniting thousands in stewardship, community, and adventure along 300 scenic miles of the North Shore. Every step celebrates public lands, volunteers, and lasting connections to nature. Watch the film here: https://bit.ly/3JShiic This project was funded by Minnesota Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund and created with filmmaker Jon Steinhorst.

Over the last weekend, I had the pleasure of experiencing two of Minnesota’s gems: the tranquil Stillwater River Cruise and the dynamic Science Museum of Minnesota. The cruise offered more than just scenic beauty; it was a moment to pause, breathe, and reflect while gliding across calm waters surrounded by timeless architecture and lush landscapes. In our fast-paced lives, moments like these are essential to recharge and reconnect with nature and perspective. Later, at the Science Museum, I was reminded of the power of curiosity and learning. From innovative exhibits to immersive scientific displays, the museum offered not only inspiration but a renewed appreciation for knowledge, progress, and how far we've come—and still have to go. Travel, when done with intention, becomes more than leisure—it becomes a journey of the mind and heart. I encourage everyone to explore places that inspire both rest and reflection. Our current Artist at Pine Needles is Greg Seitz. For over 15 years, Seitz has explored the St. Croix River’s natural systems and rich cultural history, weaving science, storytelling, and photography into his work. Seitz’s writing highlights overlooked stories—especially Indigenous voices—while examining how ecology and human life are deeply connected. His work, rooted in scientific rigor and journalistic integrity, emphasizes solidarity, resilience, and reciprocity, revealing water as the vital thread uniting land, people, and stories.
