About us

The European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) is a Public-Private Partnership that aims to facilitate and develop industrial leadership in Europe in 5G and 6G networks and services. The SNS JU funds projects that shape a solid research and innovation (R&I) roadmap and deployment agenda by engaging a critical mass of European stakeholders and facilitating international cooperation on various 6G initiatives. Industry and the EU jointly fund the SNS JU in order to foster Europe’s technological sovereignty when it comes to 6G. This is done by leading in the conception, development, and standardization of next generation connectivity technologies and encouraging early market adoption of 6G by the end of this decade. The SNS JU also boosts advanced 5G deployment in Europe to empower the development of a leading European digital market and enables the digital and green transition of the economy and society.

  • 🔐 Privacy is the top concern for future connectivity The 6G4Society citizen survey reveals that 64% of respondents rank privacy as their main priority when considering future connectivity, particularly in relation to sensing technologies, data ownership, and the use of data for AI training. 🔎 These concerns are understandable. With 6G, networks become more deeply embedded in everyday life, making it easier to collect, analyse, and combine data in new ways that bring opportunities but also risks. For 6G to earn people’s trust, it needs to be designed with privacy at its core. SNS JU projects are already leading the way, for example: 🛟 ΜΑRE_EUProject is building an intelligent, adaptive security system for 6G networks that protects user privacy while stopping cyber threats. Like a digital immune system, it monitors the network, learns from attacks, and adjusts defenses without exposing personal data, ensuring sensitive information (such as location or health data) remains safe and anonymized. 🛡️ RIGOUROUS uses AI to defend 6G services from cyberattacks by detecting and isolating threats without accessing unnecessary personal data. It acts like a smart alarm system that respects privacy: it only uses the data strictly needed for security, without tracking or storing sensitive user information.   • 🧑🌾 Smart, Sustainable Industry & Farming From airports to mango farms, one thing keeps them greener and smarter: radio spectrum 3 trials in the SNS JU Trials & Pilots Brochure n°2 show how AI and advanced 5G are making transport industry and farming smarter and more sustainable: ✈️ Smart Airport (TrialsNet) brought thermal cameras, AI passenger-flow analytics and a humanoid service robot to Athens International Airport. Over six months: 42.9 ms latency, 100% reliability, a 4.3/5 passenger satisfaction score, and more than ten thousand passenger interactions handled. 🌱 Precision Agriculture (6G-PATH) ran 3 concurrent network slices at a Spanish farm (4K drone video, low-latency drone control, and soil sensors) all isolated. AI spotted plant stress, counted fruit and predicted irrigation needs in near real time, with drone control under 15 ms. 📡 Upper 6 GHz Proof of Concept (Imagine-B5G) tested the 6,425–7,125 MHz band Europe sees as essential for 6G, proving it can deliver over 1.5 Gbps on existing infrastructure.   • 🌳 What should shape the future of 6G? For many citizens, the answer is clear: climate 🪸 According to the 6G4Society citizen survey, 4 in 10 people say climate change should be the leading issue shaping the development of future technologies. 🍀 Within SNS JU-funded projects, reducing the environmental impact of advanced connectivity networks and services is built into the design from the outset. For example: 🔸CENTRIC Project is using Artificial Intelligence to adapt network operations in real time, reducing the energy use and CO₂ emissions. 🔸Project EXIGENCE helps reduce the overall energy consumption and carbon footprint of ICT service delivery by better measuring, optimising, and incentivising ICT service consumers to use resources responsibly. 🔸SUSTAIN-6G Project — the sustainability lighthouse of the SNS JU for end-to-end 6G networks — uses ultra-low-power sensors to detect anomalies and activate cameras and drones only when needed.   • 🩺 Connected Health & Emergency Care The most powerful uses of advanced networks are not always the most visible. They can hide behind a nurse, a scanner and a 3D printer serving a remote village. 2 trials in the SNS JU Trials & Pilots Brochure n°2 show what AI-enabled 5G and early 6G mean for healthcare when distance is the obstacle: 🩹 Bioprinted Patch (6G-PATH) followed a nurse to a patient's home in a remote area: she scans a chronic wound, AI-driven analytics model it in 2D and 3D, she video-calls a specialist for guidance, and prints a personalised hydrogel patch tailored to its exact shape, all over a small 5G micro-network running from her vehicle. A clinical pilot began in a Berlin nursing home in December 2025. 🚑 Mass Casualty Incident (TrialsNet) connected first responders' wearables, AI-assisted triage and robotic video into one live dashboard during simulated large-scale emergencies in Athens and Madrid, with 99.999% service availability and location accuracy within 2 metres.   • What if a Formula 1 legend's life, a rural classroom, a factory inspection, and a phone call all had something in common? All four just became immersive… over 5G and early 6G. 4 trials in the SNS JU Trials & Pilots Brochure n°2 show how advanced connectivity is reshaping how we experience culture, learn, work and connect: 🏎️ Remember Ascari (TrialsNet) brought motorsport history to life in a Turin museum. Visitors collaborated on a virtual F1 pit stop, nearly 4,000 took part, 96% wanted to return, 80% learned something new. 🎓 XR Rural Schools (6G-PATH) delivered extended-reality lessons to two rural Romanian schools at the same quality an urban classroom gets - a direct step toward closing Europe's digital divide. 🔬 SCANNER (Imagine-B5G) let specialists in different locations inspect the same micrometre-precise digital twin of an industrial part together, in real time, under 25 ms latency. 📞 6G-XR made a holographic call straight from a normal phone dialler (no extra app) by routing it through the call infrastructure operators already use, at a steady 41–42 ms.
