We made 5 stops across 3 continents in June for the SolarWinds World Tour: Madrid, Tampa, Istanbul, Hanoi, and Austin. Istanbul and Hanoi happened on the same day, roughly 5,000 miles apart. These stops put IT pros directly in the room with the people deciding what gets built next. One attendee has been using SolarWinds since the 1990s and said the roadmap still stays ahead of where the industry is headed. Your P50 says one hundred milliseconds. Your P99 says ten seconds. Same system. The average just never showed you the gap. Here is the uncomfortable part: people do not experience your average. They remember the one request that hung, the page that would not load, the moment something felt broken. That experience lives in the long tail, and the mean smooths right over it. A median tells you what a typical request looks like. It says nothing about the slowest one percent, and the slowest one percent can be thousands of people every single day. If you only watch averages, those people stay invisible until they are frustrated. Percentiles are how you see them first. Watch the ninety-ninth percentile, not the mean.
