💜 Thank you to everyone who stood in solidarity with us outside the Embassy of Türkiye on Tuesday. It’s been a month since people standing up for LGBTQ+ rights in Türkiye were arrested. Together with Pride in London we came together to show that LGBTQ+ people in Türkiye are not alone and that we will not be divided. Thank you to all of our brilliant speakers and to everyone who came to show their support.

🌈 Good news as the Hungarian parliament has voted to amend child protection laws, scrapping measures that stigmatise LGBTQ+ people. The 2021 Child Protection Law banned the "portrayal or promotion of homosexuality or transgenderism". Now, these measures have been scrapped, a huge win for LGBTQ+ activists and human rights organisations in Hungary. LGBTQ+ people deserve to live freely and see themselves represented. There is still further to go such as the full recognition of same-sex marriage - but this is a positive step in the right direction.

💜 This #HateCrimeAwarenessWeek we're reflecting on our campaign to make anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime an aggravated offence: a campaign we won earlier this year. Hate crime against LGBTQ+ people is still a real and worrying problem. But this change in the law means that anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime is now considered a more serious offence in the eyes of the courts and perpetrators now get stronger sentences. It also gives victims more time to access justice. Read more about the campaign win ▶️ https://bit.ly/471fvPN

🌈 Thank you to everyone who took part in #RainbowLacesDay! It was brilliant to see so many clubs, teams and organisations lacing up - with themed training sessions, runs and wellbeing walks. Every pair of laces sends a message - LGBTQ+ people belong in sport and movement, and everyone should be free to enjoy the mental and physical health benefits of fitness. Feeling inspired? Rainbow Laces runs all year round, find out how you can get involved ▶️ https://bit.ly/48oHcmd

Last week, together with Deutsche Bank we hosted Building Home: Discovering Ourselves and Being There for Each Other, an evening of honest conversation and connection. Hosted by @Jontilli and chaired by our CEO Simon Blake OBE, the event brought together a brilliant panel who shared their personal stories with openness and courage. Huge thanks to Jon Tilli, Sarah McIntosh, Trenton T., Alfie B., Milly M. and Char Bailey. We also heard powerful poetry from Jo Atkins-Potts about LGBTQ+ mental health. 💜 Thank you to everyone who joined us. #WorldMentalHealthDay #RainbowLacesDay

We hope you all had a wonderful weekend and a very happy International Coming Out Day yesterday 🏳️⚧️ 🏳️🌈
International Coming Out Day is on Sunday. Our stories matter. I was 19 when I first said I *thought* I might be gay. Three years on, I had spent hours & hours discussing telling my parents. I went to London to meet them when they were working so it wasn’t in my house or theirs. I had imagined it endlessly, practising what I would say. I had also read ‘When your child comes out’ by Anne Seldon to help me understand their perspective. The stakes felt high but the prize was higher: I would no longer have to pretend. We stayed in their small motor home and I almost bottled it, but I knew if I left without telling them I was delaying it and I couldn’t bear that. So just as they were getting into bed, I climbed onto the end as I had as a kid and said ‘you know you said Jo is a bit funny, well, I am too.’ I saw the confusion on their faces so quickly said ‘I am gay. I have a boyfriend’. I hoped it wouldn’t be the surprise it turned out to be. Mum sobbed at one end of the caravan, me at the other. Unlike Mum’s tears of fear & pain, mine were tears of relief. A weight had lifted for me. I had taken a vital step towards my truth. The next day as I said goodbye Dad said: ‘don’t worry I will look after Mum, you look after yourself’. There was a sentence in Anne Seldon's book that said ‘by the time your child tells you they are gay, they will have had time to come to terms with it. You need time to adjust & that is ok.’ Those words were a lifeline in the weeks ahead as we exchanged fraught words via cold telephone kiosks & even colder letters. Just as I got used to & grew into it, happily so too did they. Dad reminded me of our conversation the day after Mum died. I had said something like ‘I thought hard about whether to tell you at all. I risked losing you but the bigger risk was I lost myself.’ It helped them: as they tried to make sense of my sexuality they knew my happiness was key. When we are able to tell our stories: we make it more possible for others. That is the quiet but unstoppable power of coming out. It is always about more than us. Of course we don't owe anyone our story & sometimes it isn't possible to tell it. Safety first. Being out or not is our choice. It is never a failure of courage. Every story is different. Some folk come out at 14, others 64. Some are met with a hug, some with a slammed door. It is neither easier or harder now, just different. There is no right way or time. The freedom to truly be ourselves is an ongoing journey. It can be painful when we know who we are but the world won’t let us just be. Our job at Stonewall, as friends, family & colleagues, is not to dictate whether, when or how a person comes out, it is to do our best to influence legislators and policy makers and help build workplaces, schools, and communities where it is safe to find your own path, your own joy at your own pace. Being trusted with people’s stories is a gift to be held gently as we work for a safe and equal world.
