Short-read sequencing filters out reads it cannot place with confidence. In complex genomes, that is nearly half your data before your analysis even begins. We sequenced 127 peanut breeding lines head-to-head at matched depth. Long-read low-pass vs. short-read low-pass. Same depth. Very different results. - 55% genome coverage vs. 17%. - 18.7x more SNPs on a pangenome graph. - 51.6x more large structural variants. - 8.53x more cost efficiency per genomic insight. And the structural variant that confers TSWV disease resistance? Short reads mapped to the edges. One long read spanned the entire 19kb insertion. The variants driving your traits of interest may not be in your current dataset. Not because of your budget. Because of read length. Meet Walid Korani, Chief Scientific Officer at Veil Genomics. Walid has spent his career in some of the most genetically complex research environments in agriculture; peanut, pine, species most labs never attempt. That work taught him exactly where standard sequencing breaks down. Long-reads had always been treated as a single-sample, high-coverage tool. Walid saw it differently. Multiplex at scale, and the application space changes entirely. Extended haplotyping. More accurate InDel and SNP calling. High-confidence mapping in repetitive regions and complex loci where short reads lose alignment. Population-scale work that arrays and short-read WGS consistently miss. That's the insight Veil was built on. Glad he's building it with us.

The hardest part of long-read sequencing isn't the sequencing. It's getting there with intact, high molecular weight DNA from whatever you're actually working with. Our CSO Walid Korani has been quietly validating our extraction and library prep protocol across species and tissue types that most labs would call edge cases. They're not edge cases anymore. Meet Christine Callahan, VP of Operations at Veil Genomics. She's not a scientist. But ask her what this work means and she'll say something like this: "It's not a TED Talk. It's sequencing runs and data transfers and yield metrics. And that's what makes it powerful." Christine joined Veil because she wanted her work to directly shape the world her daughter grows up in.
