A very happy holidays from team WBD! ✨ There’s no better way to celebrate the end of a successful year than with your colleagues and a little year-end cheer. From bumper cars in London and a live band in Hyderabad, to costume contests in Singapore and a food scavenger hunt at Eataly in New York, our year-end parties were one for the books!

Born and raised in Chicago, John Martinez grew up with Batman posters covering his bedroom walls. While he jokes that becoming an actual crime-fighting vigilante wasn’t in the cards, he has found his calling as an Advanced Artist and Animator at NetherRealm Studios (WB Games) – where his very first project was Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, a mobile game originally launched in 2011. “I’ve always been a huge Batman fan. As a kid (and still to this day), I drew Batman doodles on napkins, coasters, even sidewalks. So when I first joined the team all those years ago and found out my first game was going to be a Batman title, I thought someone was pranking me,” he laughs. Now after 15 years with the company and multiple AAA games under his belt, including Mortal Kombat 1, the feeling of seeing his name in the credits for that very first game still remains his fondest memory. But a close second is being appointed as a Character Point Animator responsible for the animation direction of different characters and side modes. “The amount of confidence and trust my Department Lead showed in me was humbling and I wanted to do everything in my power to prove they made the right decision,” he recalls. ”It’s an exciting role because I get to collaborate with our Design Team and other talented groups to make sure a character’s motion, movement style and overall attitude works with the provided move set. It’s all about making the character feel as consistent and as fully realized as possible.” For John, working on characters from beloved franchises, like Mortal Kombat, which he grew up playing right in his hometown, is a dream come true. In fact, he even attended high school less than a block away from the original Midway Games studio, now home to NetherRealm Studios. But when asked what makes Warner Bros. Games truly special, his answer is direct: the people. “What impresses me the most is how open and willing everyone is to new ideas and different perspectives,” says John. “We’re all pushing each other to make the coolest, best-looking, most fun, kick-ass games we can – and that openness allows us to do just that. I really believe that we are creating some of the best work that we have ever produced during my time here at NetherRealm Studios.” Outside of work, John loves to cook and is all about family and food. When they’re not out trying different restaurants, his wife and two sons often take turns requesting various dishes and he frequently draws inspiration from the Food Network to fulfill their asks. (We’re still waiting on our dinner invitation. 😋) #EmployeeSpotlight #LifeAtWBG
