As part of Military Appreciation Month, Wells Fargo leaders gathered in Charlotte last week for the fourth Julie Scammahorn Leadership Award ceremony. Julie’s legacy of dedication to service – both in the military and at Wells Fargo – continues to live on at Wells Fargo through this award and among the incredible work of our veteran colleagues. Congratulations to Corey Hamm, this year’s award winner, whose leadership and impact reflect Julie’s values of responsibility to your team, community, and to something larger than yourself.

During Small Business Appreciation Month, and every month, we celebrate the journeys of entrepreneurs like Sandra Lopez. Sandra was called in to help a colleague’s struggling business. After turning things around, she realized one thing: She could do this herself. She started saving. Today, she’s the founder and president of City-Wide General Contractors, a general contracting company in Houston, specializing in multifamily communities. Her coolness under pressure and strong financial management have guided the business through uncertain times. “I started my business because I was tired of living paycheck to paycheck, and I knew my potential. I knew I could go out there, do the work, run the office, and grow something of my own,” she said. Sandra recently fulfilled a dream of buying her own commercial building through a low-interest loan from LiftFund. The loan was made possible in part through Wells Fargo’s $20 million Open for Business Growth program. Read more stories of how these grants are helping growth-ready businesses take the next step. https://lnkd.in/eq5-844T

Atlanta is one of America’s fastest-growing metro areas, and we’re focused on making that growth sustainable for everyone. That’s why Wells Fargo and the Wells Fargo Foundation are putting $2.8 million in grants to work for businesses and families in the Atlanta metro, bringing our total philanthropic investment to more than $40 million since 2021. With a $550,000 grant, we’re supporting the BizLabs Program from Invest Atlanta, which connects entrepreneurs with technical assistance, guidance, and resources to scale sustainably. “This continued partnership helps create real opportunities for local entrepreneurs — people with ideas, passion, and deep roots in our city,” said Dr. Eloisa Klementich, president and CEO of Invest Atlanta. With a $2.25 million grant, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta is addressing barriers to homeownership and housing stability — from tangled title issues to critical home repairs — so they can grow multigenerational wealth. “This investment helps remove those barriers so people can stay in their homes, make needed repairs, and pass on what they’ve built,” said Frank Fernandez, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. https://lnkd.in/eFxeRVGt

Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us to make space for simple, meaningful ways to support our mental well-being each day, all year long. Earlier this month, we brought that commitment to life at a Mindfulness May event in Des Moines, Iowa, creating opportunities for connection, kindness, and care. From spending time together to enjoying comforting moments with rescue puppies and kittens from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, the event highlighted how small moments can make a meaningful difference. What’s one small way you or your team are making space for mental well-being this month?

Sandra Ho fell into mortgage lending nearly 20 years ago through a consulting project. She stayed because of the passion, energy, and verve of her people. She believes that, though it sounds simple, working with people you enjoy is critical to success in the office. “We choose to spend a lot of time at work,” she said. “So find joy in what you do — and the people you do it with — every day.” Today, as head of Home Lending Sales at Wells Fargo, Sandra leads a team of more than 1,000 employees. Managing an organization that large requires constant communication. That’s why Sandra and her leadership team “think with one brain” by staying transparent about decision-making. “We connect frequently and articulate two things: the context in which you’re making your decisions, and how you’re making your decisions,” Sandra said. “Being able to talk about the process helps everyone understand how we got from A to B. That’s much more powerful than just saying, ‘here’s my decision, replicate it.’” It also means understanding the ramifications of those decisions. “Every decision requires trade-offs,” Sandra said. “It’s nice to be popular as a leader, but sometimes you have to make the hard choices. So, do the work, understand the lesser of two evils, and then make the decision.” Sandra’s leadership style prioritizes forward progress. “It’s more harmful to sit around and wait for a sign than it is to make a decision and move on,” she said. “If we’re going to fail, fail fast. Then recover fast. You don’t always know all the data. Do as much investigation as you can, inspect and understand the data, then make the decision boldly.” In the end, though, every decision Sandra makes comes back to people — the customers she serves and the employees she works alongside. “I genuinely enjoy the people I work with,” Sandra said. “People energize me. And when you find an elegant solution to a problem, that’s pretty fun.” We’re thankful for leaders like Sandra who find joy in the work and the people doing the work.
