The Department of Mental Health & Wellness is a new department for the organization with the mission to create, grow, and sustain a healthy environment surrounding mental health, wellness, and well-being as a vehicle for high performance. The vision of the department is to engage to Miami Marlins organization across affiliates and through multiple levels of the organization to facilitate a safe, high-quality, and effective environment around mental health, wellness, and well-being.
Job Description
The Miami Marlins organization is seeking an Assistant Director of Mental Health & Wellness to support, sustain, and develop integrated programming for mental health, wellness, and performance for players and staff across the organization. This role is embedded within Baseball Operations and operates in a fast-paced, high-performance environment requiring clinical judgment, cultural competence, and strong collaboration. The Assistant Director of Mental Health & Wellness will play an integral role in building the foundation for mental health, wellness, and performance throughout the organization. This is a leadership position within the organization.
The Assistant Director may be asked to provide direct services, coordinate care, and contribute to program development under the leadership of the Director of Mental Health & Wellness. However, the Assistant Director will work as a "mental health and wellness broker" than a primary service provider across the organization. This position will have regular engagement across the Jupiter Academy, Dominican Republic Academy, and affiliates and Major League clubs.
Core Responsibilities
- Promote and facilitate a stigma-reduced environment that prioritizes psychological safety, confidentiality, and help-seeking behavior.
- Build on an existing foundation for a new department, implement existing plans, and contribute to expanding the foundation and vision of the department.
- Support development and delivery of mental health, wellness, and mental performance curricula that are developmentally, culturally, and contextually appropriate.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Athletic Training & Rehabilitation, Education, Player Development, and Coaching staff - including responding to and supporting urgent and crisis intervention efforts in coordination with the Performance Team.
- Consult with players, coaches, teams, and staff on mental health, wellness, and performance optimization, not just for players, but also staff.
- Coordinate outsourced referrals and continuity of care across domestic and international assignments across the spectrum of mental health, wellness, and performance. Coordination also includes executing administrative responsibilities tied to coordination.
- Engage in human development, leadership development, and mentorship efforts when contexts and situations arise within and across departments.
- Cultural competence and humility, including experience working within Latin American-influenced contexts.
- Knowledge of developmental and career-related concerns across the lifespan (approximately ages 16–50).
- Working knowledge of evidence-based mental health and wellness interventions.
- Working knowledge of evidence-based mental skills training and performance psychology interventions.
- Working knowledge of group dynamics in sport and high performance & how people learn, grow, and develop in high performance contexts,
- Ability to differentiate between mental health and mental performance needs and facilitate appropriate referrals.
- Ability to provide solution-focused, brief direct services that support individual psychotherapy, mental performance, leadership development, group programming, and psychoeducation for players and staff.
- Strong knowledge of and adherence to ethical and legal standards in psychotherapy, counseling, and performance psychology.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and consultation skills across diverse populations.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to interpret and comply with Major League Baseball rules, regulations, and ethical standards.
- Experience working with high performers and/or high-performance environments including, but not limited to sport or tactical populations
- Eligibility for mental health licensure in the state of Florida; OR
- Eligibility for Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) certification through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP); AND
- Experience working in culturally diverse or international settings.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Travel required to Spring Training, affiliates, and road trips as needed.
- Requires daily interaction with professional athletes, coaches, and staff; professionalism, discretion, and a high level of respect are essential.
- Will require frequent use of technology ranging from cell phones and tablets to different software platforms and tools for communication and execution of job responsibilities.
