The Legal Billing Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm’s Billing team, including team leadership, workflow management, and staff development. This role also serves as a key resource for reporting, quality control, and process oversight.


Legal Billing Manager Responsibilities:

  • Provide billing updates and insights to leadership.
  • Prepare and review daily, weekly, and monthly reporting as needed.
  • Monitor billing transactions and activity to ensure accuracy, timeliness, completeness, and compliance with company policies.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance workflow efficiency.
  • Partner with attorneys and legal support staff to develop invoicing approaches that align with client requirements and billing guidelines.
  • Respond to billing inquiries promptly and provide a high level of service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as a key point of contact and escalation resource between Legal, Billing, and cross-functional teams.
  • Represent the department in meetings and cross-functional discussions.
  • Oversee adherence to timekeeping policies and client billing guidelines.
  • Lead the billing process and support a successful monthly close.
  • Lead, develop, and support the Billing team, identifying growth opportunities and partnering with leadership and training resources to strengthen performance.
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones and team meetings, including coaching and development conversations with direct reports.
  • Set clear team expectations, monitor performance, and address personnel matters in a timely and effective manner.
  • Leverage technology tools to improve efficiency while maintaining a high standard of professionalism.
  • Use sound judgment and discretion to build strong working relationships with attorneys and staff.


Legal Billing Manager Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant experience will also be considered.
  • At least five years of experience leading a large team (10+ employees) in a high-volume environment, with demonstrated success improving team performance.
  • Prior law firm experience is preferred.
  • Experience with eBilling systems is preferred.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Strong understanding of billing operations, workflows, and business processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of billing system functionality and capabilities.
  • Solid knowledge of legal accounting and billing processes.
  • Working knowledge of Aderant or a similar legal billing platform, with the ability to apply system capabilities to billing solutions.
  • Familiarity with software used for law firm billing, cash applications, and collections.
  • Proven ability to lead teams with a focus on performance, development, and process improvement.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives at once.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to evaluate complex issues and recommend or implement effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
