Role Overview
Our client is a middle-market private equity firm with a growing portfolio of six platform and add-on companies across multiple industries. Rather than placing a standalone marketing leader at each portfolio company, the firm is intentionally building a shared services marketing model to drive consistency, scale, and measurable value creation across the portfolio.
The Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) will serve as the senior marketing leader across the portfolio, partnering closely with CEOs, executive leadership teams, and PE Operating Partners to design and execute tailored go-to-market strategies for each company while building a centralized marketing function that can scale with future acquisitions.
This is a highly visible, execution-oriented leadership role ideal for a marketing executive who thrives in PE-backed environments and knows how to balance strategy with hands-on delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio-Level Marketing Leadership
Serve as the senior marketing leader across all portfolio companies, aligning marketing strategy with investment theses and value-creation plans
Partner directly with portfolio company CEOs, Presidents, and leadership teams to establish company-specific marketing roadmaps
Act as a strategic advisor to PE Operating Partners on branding, demand generation, and growth initiatives
Shared Services Model Development
Design, build, and lead a shared services marketing organization supporting all portfolio companies
Define which marketing functions are centralized vs. embedded (e.g., brand, demand gen, digital, content, analytics, PR)
Recruit, hire, and develop a high-caliber internal marketing team and manage select external agencies and vendors
Go-to-Market & Growth Strategy
Develop and execute marketing strategies across B2B and/or B2C environments (depending on portfolio mix)
Lead initiatives across brand positioning, digital marketing, demand generation, product marketing, and customer acquisition
Support new market entry, product launches, and cross-sell / upsell initiatives across the portfolio
M&A & Integration Support
Support pre- and post-acquisition marketing diligence and integration efforts
Rapidly assess acquired companies’ marketing maturity and implement scalable best practices
Ensure consistent messaging, brand alignment, and go-to-market execution post-close
Data, Analytics & ROI
Establish KPI frameworks and dashboards to measure marketing effectiveness and ROI
Tie marketing initiatives directly to revenue growth, customer acquisition costs, and margin expansion
Regularly report performance to executive leadership and PE sponsors
Ideal Candidate Profile
15+ years of progressive marketing leadership experience, including senior-level roles
Proven experience working in private equity-backed or high-growth environments
Demonstrated success building and leading shared services or centralized marketing functions
Strong executive presence with the ability to influence CEOs, Boards, and Operating Partners
