About Us

The Northeastern Retail Lumber Association (NRLA) is a regional trade association representing independently owned lumber and building material dealers across the Northeast. Our members play a critical role in the housing supply chain, supplying the materials used to build and improve homes across the region.

Position Overview

NRLA is seeking an experienced Director of Government Affairs to lead and manage the association’s government affairs department across eight northeastern states and at the federal level.

As a trade association, NRLA’s advocacy program is member-driven. The Director is responsible for translating member priorities into coordinated legislative and regulatory strategies, while managing the relationships, resources, and processes required to deliver results.

This role serves as the primary representative, and public-facing voice of the industry’s government affairs program and reports directly to the President.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and lead NRLA’s government affairs department
  • Develop and implement legislative and regulatory strategies across multiple states and federally
  • Coordinate the work of contract lobbyists and internal staff
  • Support and manage nine member committees responsible for policy development and industry positions
  • Advance advocacy efforts through direct engagement, PAC activity, and member participation
  • Monitor and communicate legislative and regulatory developments impacting the industry
  • Represent the NRLA and its members before policymakers, stakeholders, and industry audiences
  • Collaborate with communications, publications, education, and executive leadership to support advocacy initiatives
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in legislative affairs, lobbying, or government relations
  • Strong understanding of state and federal legislative and regulatory processes
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, multi-state advocacy efforts
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
Additional Details
  • Full-time hybrid position (2–3 days in-office)
  • Travel required throughout the Northeast and to Washington, D.C. (approximately 10–12 trips per year)
  • Valid driver’s license required
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range: $100,000–$120,000 (commensurate with experience)
