A quick thought for companies and hiring managers… Lately, I’ve been seeing great candidates get very close to receiving an offer, only for the process to stall because the candidate asked for $5,000 more in salary. In many cases, companies decide not to move forward because of that difference. But here’s something worth thinking about: losing a strong candidate over a relatively small salary gap can cost much more in the long run. The cost of reopening the search, spending more time interviewing, and delaying productivity can easily exceed that amount. Top candidates know their value, and sometimes a small adjustment can make the difference between closing the hire or restarting the search. Great talent is hard to find. It’s not always this cut and dry. More often, internal equity issues surface in this situation.... creating wage gaps. If one person is hired at $5K more than a team of 20 despite having less experience, the right move is typically to make equity adjustments across that team, not just fix the one offer. At scale, that can mean MILLIONS of dollars across global or multi-state organizations. That’s why a recruiter’s best friend is a compensation analyst.

We really need to rethink how we evaluate talent. Just because someone is not currently working, it does NOT mean they deserve a lower salary. Recently, a friend of mine applied for a role after being out of work for a year. He cleared the interviews, proved his capability, and demonstrated his experience. But when the offer came — it was almost half of his previous salary, just because of that gap. How does a career gap suddenly reduce someone’s skills, knowledge, or potential? A gap could mean many things — personal responsibilities, health, upskilling, or simply a tough job market. It does NOT mean a person has lost their worth. If a candidate is good enough to clear your hiring process, Then they are worthy of being paid fairly. Let’s stop normalising this practice of penalising people for gaps. Let’s start valuing skills, experience, and potential — not just continuity. What I tend to see: - The compensation doesn’t align with the expectations of the role - The brief is too narrow (searching for a very specific profile) - Internal decision making slows momentum - The company story isn’t quite landing with the market None of these are unusual. But they do change how a search needs to be approached. Because often the strongest candidates aren’t actively looking, they’re considering whether a move makes sense and consider multiple factors such as risk, trajectory, and long term opportunity. If those elements aren’t clear or compelling, engagement lessens. The searches that move well tend to have one thing in common: Clear positioning, realistic scope, and alignment internally.
