May marks SunSmart Skin Cancer Prevention Month. But for many teams working outdoors, UV exposure isn’t occasional. It’s part of the job. In Ireland, skin cancer is the most common cancer, with over 11,000 cases diagnosed every year, and outdoor workers can be exposed to 2–3 times more UV radiation than indoor workers. Yet on many sites, it’s still not being treated as a workplace risk. We’re seeing more organisations take a structured approach, integrating sun safety into risk assessments, planning and daily site operations, not just awareness campaigns. Because like any other hazard, the difference is in how consistently it’s managed in practice. If this hasn’t been fully considered across your sites, it’s worth a closer look. I am pleased to be leading this new collaboration between Heriot‑Watt University and NHS Scotland Assure, part of Public Services Delivery Scotland, focused on advancing understanding of water and drainage systems in the healthcare built environment. Our newly established research facility provides a unique platform for the investigation of clinical water systems, enabling us to replicate realistic hospital conditions and generate robust, high‑quality evidence. This work is expected to have significant impact by improving the design, operation and management of healthcare water and wastewater systems, strengthening infection prevention and control, and supporting safer patient care. The collaboration also provides valuable opportunities for student learning and researcher development, helping to build future capacity in this critically important area of healthcare infrastructure research. We look forward to a long a fruitful collaboration. Chris Turney, Omar Laghrouche, David Kelly, Healthcare Infection Society, Royal Society for Public Health, Heriot-Watt University
