Concerning news that #Aedes aegypti was found reproducing in the UK for the first time, but at localised focus only, and risk for disease transmission remains very low. However, a warming climate could make longer-term survival of imported mosquitos more likely. Good to see strong surveillance and control measures being implemented by UK Health Security Agency.

🔙 It's #ThrowbackThursday and we are revisiting the world of fruit bats, seasonal birth pulses, and wildlife disease surveillance. 🦇 Detecting a virus in a wildlife population does not depend only on where researchers look. It can also depend on when they look. Using an age-structured Bayesian model, the authors examined how seasonal birth pulses may influence Ebola virus transmission and detection in African straw-coloured fruit bats. The model suggests that the arrival of young, susceptible bats could contribute to recurring periods of viral transmission. The practical takeaway? Wildlife surveillance must account for host ecology and population cycles. Last week, the US Department of Agriculture published new data that documents the country’s first outbreak—in Utah—of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, in captive mink. While the data do not specify whether the affected animals were farmed mink, Utah has a significant mink fur industry. This outbreak raises serious public health concerns. Because mink can—and do—transmit diseases to humans, the potential impact of a large-scale bird flu outbreak among captive mink could be devastating for confined and wild mink, other wildlife, and people. We are safely capturing White-backed Vultures to collect blood samples, oral swabs and cloacal swabs for vital health surveillance. These samples will help investigate potential lead toxicity and exposure to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus (HPAIV), contributing to a stronger understanding of the health risks facing these endangered scavengers. This work supports the Zimbabwe Vulture Action Plan’s objectives of improving knowledge of vulture populations and reducing human-driven threats through coordinated research, monitoring and conservation action. It also aligns with the SADC Vulture Conservation Strategy and Action Plan by strengthening regional data collection, disease and toxicology surveillance, and evidence-based protection of vultures across southern Africa. Vultures are essential ecosystem service providers, rapidly removing carcasses and helping to limit disease risks in the environment. Early detection of toxicological and disease threats can guide timely conservation action and help safeguard White-backed Vultures across Zimbabwe and the wider KAZA landscape.
In Zimbabwe, one of the best things you can do for a vulture is take its blood. Last week was International Vulture Awareness Day. One of the most useful things you can do for a vulture, it turns out, is take its blood. The birds in this footage from Zimbabwe are carefully captured, sampled, and released. Each gives us a few millilitres of blood - and that tells us what no amount of watching from a distance can. We're hunting two invisible killers. Lead: a carcass shot with lead ammunition carries fragments the birds can't see and can't avoid, and even trace amounts attack their nervous systems. Avian influenza: bird flu has torn through wild bird populations worldwide, and for a species already on the edge, an outbreak here would be catastrophic. You can't manage a threat you can't measure. A vulture circling overhead tells you nothing about the lead in its blood or the virus in its system. A sample does - which is why this work runs through our laboratory, the only wildlife disease and forensics facility of its kind in Zimbabwe and the wider KAZA region.What is a good headline. Vultures are Africa's most threatened group of birds, and nature's sanitation service - quietly stopping disease before it reaches livestock and people. AIMSurv: Building Harmonized Mosquito Surveillance Across Europe The AIMSurv initiative represents a major milestone in collaborative mosquito surveillance — implementing the first pan‑European harmonized monitoring effort for invasive Aedes mosquito species. With participation from 42 volunteer teams across 24 countries, AIMSurv standardizes field sampling protocols (including eggs and adults), frequency of sampling, and data reporting. This harmonized dataset supports continental‑scale insights into Aedes albopictus, Ae. japonicus, Ae. koreicus and other AIM species — critical for early detection and coordinated vector management strategies in a changing climate. Such harmonized surveillance builds the foundation for robust risk assessment, data sharing and coordinated responses to emerging vector threats.
