India’s private space story is moving beyond the question of who can launch a satellite. The next question is: who can see what is happening around it? Bengaluru-based Digantara has unveiled MOSAIC, an AI-powered optical sensing network designed to detect and track satellites, orbital debris and other objects moving through space. Its initial deployment consists of five interconnected sensor nodes operating together rather than as isolated telescopes. The system can search large portions of the sky, identify faint objects using AI and turn those observations into orbital intelligence. That sounds technical, but the business and strategic logic is straightforward. Modern economies increasingly depend on satellites for communications, navigation, weather, financial systems, defence and infrastructure. As more objects enter orbit, simply owning satellites is no longer enough. You also need to know what is approaching them. Which object changed its orbit? Which satellite is passing nearby? Where is the debris? Is something behaving unexpectedly? And how quickly can you know? That intelligence has traditionally depended partly on data produced outside India. Digantara is trying to build more of that capability domestically. And the architecture is particularly interesting. Rather than depending on one extremely sophisticated observation system, MOSAIC is designed as a distributed network of autonomous sensors. More nodes can eventually mean broader coverage, greater resilience and the ability to maintain independent custody of objects moving through orbit. That changes what a space-tech company can sell. The product is no longer merely hardware pointed at the sky. It is persistent information about what is happening above it. As thousands more commercial and strategic satellites enter orbit, that intelligence could become infrastructure in its own right—for satellite operators, governments, defence agencies and anyone who cannot afford to lose track of an asset moving thousands of kilometres per hour. India spent decades building the capability to reach space. Companies like Digantara are now building the capability to understand what is happening once we get there. What if the next layer of space infrastructure didn’t need a rocket? If you want persistent eyes or signals over Earth, you’re currently forced into an expensive compromise: • Drones run out of battery in hours. • Low Earth orbit satellites race around Earth at 27,000 km/h, creating brief flyover windows unless you build large constellations. That leaves a massive, underutilized layer between 20 km and 50 km: the stratosphere. Red Balloon Aerospace , an Indian deep-tech startup from Vijayawada, is building commercial infrastructure in that gap. Instead of rocket launches, it uses super-pressure balloons through its VISTA platform. Ordinary weather balloons expand in the daytime sun and eventually descend. Super-pressure envelopes are engineered to maintain their volume and internal pressure through day-night temperature swings, enabling much longer-duration operation. The company validated its core flight and materials technology during Mission SANA, reaching ~25 km and carrying payloads from 7 commercial and institutional partners on a single flight. Next is HELIX, its planned autonomous, steerable stratospheric airship for persistent communications, disaster response and wide-area surveillance. The investor thesis isn’t about replacing SpaceX. It’s about recognizing that some communication, imaging and monitoring missions may never need to reach orbit in the first place. Rockets capture the headlines. But some of the most cost-effective infrastructure for connecting and monitoring the planet might simply float above the clouds. Drishti Was Just the Beginning: GalaxEye Is Looking at the World What happens when a young Indian space-tech company launches an ambitious satellite, encounters one of the harsh realities of operating in space—and responds by thinking even bigger? That was the fascinating story that emerged from my exclusive ADU conversation with Suyash Singh, Co-founder & CEO of GalaxEye Space, at BSX 2026 in Bengaluru. Suyash summed up GalaxEye's ambition in one powerful sentence: “We want to be technology innovators from India to the world.” And the roadmap certainly reflects that ambition. 🚀 Two more satellites targeted by the end of 2027 🛰️ 30 satellites in orbit by 2030 🏭 A Bengaluru facility capable of building around 20 satellites annually 🌍 Plans to develop sovereign constellations for customers and countries 🌐 Expansion ambitions spanning the US, Middle East and eventually markets such as Africa 💡 Continued investment in indigenous technology and intellectual property Perhaps the line that caught the aviation journalist in me most was Suyash's comparison between satellites and aircraft: “We want to become an OEM in the satellite space.” He envisages a future where countries could operate their own satellite fleets much as they operate aircraft today—and GalaxEye wants to be among the companies building those satellites for them. The journey after Mission Drishti is therefore not simply about replacing one spacecraft. It is about Generation 2 technology, scale, manufacturing, supply chains, talent, global markets and building an Indian company capable of exporting sovereign space capability. There are challenges too. Suyash spoke candidly about the evolving Indian space supply chain, the continuing search for high-quality talent and the realities of raising capital. Or, as he put it rather perfectly: “It's a constant hustle for an entrepreneur.” For me, that captured something larger about India's NewSpace generation. These are entrepreneurs willing to build, launch, learn, stumble, rebuild—and look upwards again. Mission Drishti looked at Earth. GalaxEye is now looking at the world. India is building its own “eyes on the sky.” Bengaluru-based space-tech startup Digantara is developing MOSAIC, an AI-powered space-surveillance network designed to autonomously detect, identify and track satellites, space debris and other objects in orbit. The initial network uses five interconnected sensor nodes, with AI/ML helping distinguish stars, satellites and debris and continuously build an orbital picture without requiring an operator to specify which object to track. Digantara says each system can observe roughly 400–500 unique objects in a night, while the company is working toward a much larger global network. The strategic significance is bigger than tracking space junk.
