WE'RE HAVING A HACKATHON. AND YOU'RE INVITED. More than 2 billion people remain offline. Yet AI is increasingly shaping how people access information, services, and economic opportunity. The question is not just what AI can do, but how it can work in places with limited connectivity, local languages, and real-world constraints. The World Bank Group is inviting young innovators aged 18-35 to take part in the Small AI for Development Hackathon Challenge, building practical solutions for challenges in agriculture, health, and tourism. The hackathon is powered by Hack-Nation, who are running the full competition from applications through to the finalist selection. Winning teams will travel to Seoul (all expense paid) to present their ideas at the Global AI & Digital Summit 2026. Applications are open through September 26. Having worked with the internet since 1995, I see one crucial difference in the AI revolution: The internet gave people access to the same information. AI can adapt that information to the individual person, local language and local reality. The real breakthrough may therefore not come from the largest AI models, but from small, accessible solutions that turn global knowledge into local capability – even with limited connectivity. If we succeed, a farmer, student or healthcare worker should not have to adapt to the technology. The technology should adapt to them. That is how AI can help reduce the digital divide rather than widen it.
When institutions remove age as a barrier to opportunity, it affirms the value of lifelong learning. I appreciate that the World Bank Group, through the Small AI for Development Hackathon, is enabling professionals and learners at all stages to engage with development challenges in their field of interest. `#WBGSmallAIGADS`
