In THE LÄND, medical innovation is moving forward🧑🔬 Germany ranks among Europe’s leaders when it comes to medical inventions – and the German Southwest plays a key role in this success 👇 A recent analysis by the European Patent Office, conducted together with the Fraunhofer ISI based in Karlsruhe, found that two research hospitals from Baden-Württemberg are among Europe’s most active clinics in terms of patent filings: Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg (UKHD) and Universitätsklinikum Freiburg. Both rank among the top seven European hospitals with the highest number of patent applications – a clear sign of the region’s strong spirit of medical innovation. The study also showed that the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ranks third in Europe among public research institutions. According to EPO President António Campinas, this reflects one of Europe’s greatest strengths – public research that enhances the continent’s global competitiveness. If you’re looking to become part of cutting-edge research, Baden-Württemberg is the perfect place to advance your scientific career. Europe is home to world-class universities, pioneering research institutions, and a tradition of scientific excellence that has driven medical breakthroughs for centuries. These assets give Europe the opportunity to build a globally competitive life sciences ecosystem, but only if the right choices are made now. Now, #EuropesChoice is whether to build on its strengths, invest in innovation and create the right environment for medicine development and production, or stand on the sidelines and watch other regions reap the benefits. EFPIA makes a compelling case: Europe has the fundamental building blocks - world-class universities, pioneering research institutions, and a rich tradition of scientific excellence. The question is whether we'll capitalize on these strengths or let them slip away to more competitive regions. From a health economics perspective, this isn't just about preserving legacy - it's about securing Europe's future as a global leader in medicine development and production. The window for decisive action is narrowing.

According to a recent report by the European Patent Office (EPO) and Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, Dutch public research institutions are among Europe’s most active innovators. Between 2001 and 2020, they filed over 8,300 international patent applications, confirming the Netherlands’ strong position in translating scientific discoveries into practice. TNO stands out as one of the top contributors, reflecting its central role in driving applied research and technological development. TNO’s work demonstrates how close collaboration between science and industry fuels impactful innovation. Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) is also highlighted as a leader in direct patent submissions, a clear indication that the translation from medical science to market is exceptionally well-organised. At Leiden Bio Science Park, this connection between fundamental science and application is part of our daily reality. The collaboration between universities, research institutes, and companies creates a fertile ground where ideas grow into solutions that improve health and quality of life. These results reaffirm the importance of strong connections between research, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship, connections that continue to strengthen within our community.

We need more start ups in Europe! Last week the European Patent Office Observatory presented in an online event a new study around the first mapping of European hospitals and public research patenting activities. The snippit in this post is a contribution of mine to the discussion. You maybe identify my passion about bringing more venture capital into the European and especially the German market. Our society needs on a macroeconomic level a much broader pipeline of start-up companies in order to create more value out of the excellent science we have at our universities and public research organizations. I want to sincerely thank my panelist colleagues for the high quality discussion Mehdi GMAR from CNRS, Muriel Attané from EARTO - European Association of Research and Technology Organisations, Noa Bach from Greater Paris University Hospitals - AP-HP, and our moderator Víctor Arribas Martínez from European Patent Office #innovation #patents #research #science # scienceapplication ➡️ Find more information in the links Watch the full debate: https://lnkd.in/d2eRrjuN The Press Release of the Max-Planck-Society: https://lnkd.in/eMNf2WmM Link to the full report of the EPO: https://lnkd.in/dXK_bdvb
