On #WorldMosquitoDay, we highlight why mosquito-borne diseases demand stronger global action and sustained preparedness in Europe. 🦟Mosquitoes can transmit diseases including #dengue, #malaria, #chikungunya, #Zika, yellow fever and West Nile virus. These vector-borne diseases disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries, while climate change is also reshaping risks in Europe, posing a serious challenge for European #HealthSecurity. Recognising this risk, the European Commission DG #HERA is increasing EU & global preparedness by: 🔹 including VBDs in its priority threats list and committing to address them in upcoming climate adaptation plans, in line with a #OneHealth approach; 🔹 committing in its 2025 MCM Strategy to preparing a Medical Counter Measures (MCM) roadmap for VBDs, to help address the current gaps in R&I, clinical management, diagnostics, and vector control that persist; 🔹 committing in its 2025 MCM Strategy to mainstream a gender-sensitive approach, important as most infectious diseases have specific #sex and #gender related impact & some are particularly harmful for#pregnant populations, including #malaria, #Dengue, and #Zika - with severe implications for the health and wellbeing of future generations 🌍 EU-funded R&I was instrumental in developing the first-ever vaccine for dengue, and the first two #malaria vaccines, largely supported via European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) MCMs are still missing for many of the mosquito borne diseases that continue to pose health risks globally. More innovative, inclusive, and accessible solutions are needed to protect all populations, worldwide. Viral epidemics have long been recognised as a source of threat for human survival. In 2008, Noam Chomsky recognised it as a vital threat alongside nuclear war and the ongoing environmental collapse. Dr Brian Wahl, epidemiologist and assistant professor at the Yale School of Public Health, says if the goal is to prevent zoonotic diseases from occurring, it is important also to consider how animals raised and kept for human consumption create conditions for pathogens to jump to humans. Vector-Borne Diseases | Microbiology Awareness Tiny vectors can have a big impact on human health. Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Lymphatic Filariasis, and Japanese Encephalitis are examples of vector-borne diseases transmitted by infected mosquitoes and other vectors. 🦠 Prevention starts with simple actions: remove stagnant water, use repellents and mosquito nets, wear protective clothing, maintain clean surroundings, and stay aware of symptoms. New research shows that Rift Valley fever virus lineage C has been circulating continuously in Rwanda between 2022 and 2025, rather than being repeatedly reintroduced. 🦠 By sequencing virus samples collected from livestock over three years, researchers found evidence of sustained local transmission, highlighting the value of continuous genomic surveillance and a One Health approach to detecting and responding to emerging infectious diseases. World Mosquito Day shines a spotlight on one of the world’s smallest creatures—and one of the most significant public-health challenges associated with it. 🦟 Observed annually on 20 August, the day commemorates the discovery in 1897 by British physician Sir Ronald Ross that female mosquitoes transmit malaria parasites between humans. This breakthrough helped transform our understanding of malaria transmission and laid important foundations for modern mosquito-borne disease research. Today, World Mosquito Day raises awareness of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, including malaria, dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya, while highlighting the importance of prevention, surveillance, research, and access to effective healthcare. It also recognizes the scientists, healthcare workers, public-health professionals, and communities working to reduce the enormous burden of mosquito-borne diseases worldwide. A higher prevalence of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases such as chikungunya and West Nile virus, and tick-borne diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), is increasing in Europe and is prompting a need for a deliberate policy effort to improve the preparedness of countries across the region.
