🏗️ 🥂 Today marks the groundbreaking ceremony for FXCollaborative's Arverne East Building D, a 320-unit, mixed-use, affordable housing project taking shape on an oceanfront site in the Rockaways. The project is a winner in the fourth round of NYSERDA's Building of Excellence funding pipeline for sustainable housing across the state. Located within both a designated disadvantaged community and a federal Opportunity Zone, the 360-square-foot project will serve households earning up to 100% area median income. The building's carefully considered angles and stepped massing are responsive to the resilient site topography and maximize terraces and ocean views. The design team drew inspiration from the early 19th century Rockaway seaside communities, echoing the materiality and tectonics of the beachfront bungalow structures, the tactility of the boardwalk, and the undulation of the dune-scape habitat. The building is designed to implement energy efficiency and resiliency measures including a district geothermal system, which will ease utility costs for residents of Arverne D and other residential buildings in the development while improving energy efficiency. Arverne D is designed to achieve Passive House certification through PHIUS and is developed by L+M Development Partners LLC. 🍃 Read more about the project's sustainability measures here: https://on.ny.gov/3O64JCA

Looking forward to hosting the panel "Setting the foundations for regenerative precincts and the power of early engagement" tomorrow at #SydneyBuild Expo. We’ll be unpacking why the earliest stages of precinct planning are so critical to delivering truly regenerative outcomes, with a focus on: - Designing with Country (joined by Nicoletta Andreou, Arup) - Nature‑positive, landscape‑led design (joined by Lucy Johnson, Moir Studio) - Water Sensitive Urban Design (joined by Emma Doolan, Groundswell Engineers) We’ll be drawing on EXP Capital's Dalmore Park masterplan, a ~150‑hectare employment and innovation precinct in Maitland LGA, and the first project in Australia to register under Green Star Communities v2, to share real examples of how early engagement and commitment to sustainability can shape long‑term, regenerative outcomes.

The next feature in our Earth Month series, Yonge & Roselawn (2400 Yonge), demonstrates how urban intensification can balance heritage preservation, connectivity, and high-performance sustainable design. Located in Midtown Toronto, the project introduces two purpose-built rental towers while preserving the existing heritage frontage—bringing new residential density and amenities that support a connected and walkable urban environment. Meeting the requirements of CAGBC's Zero Carbon Building - Design Standard™, the project also targets LEED Gold certification and Tier 2 of the Toronto Green Standard v3. A high-performance envelope minimizes thermal bridging, reduces heating and cooling demands, and enhances long-term occupant comfort, while a geothermal system below the structure supports low-carbon operations and reduces lifecycle emissions. Excited to see this discussion on the urban evolution of Mexico City! The tension between formal planning and informal growth is a challenge many global megacities face today. Looking forward to hearing Mauricio Ceballos and Richard David De Pirro dive into the impact of large-scale infrastructure like the Texcoco and Santa Lucía projects. If you’re around Harvard GSD tomorrow, this is a must-attend! 📍 Gund 124 🕛 12:00 PM – 1:15 PM #UrbanDesign #MexicoCity #Infrastructure #SustainableCities #HarvardGSD
Join us next Tuesday Territory and Urban Transformation: Infrastructure, Speculation, and the Edges of Mexico City 🗓️ Tuesday, April 21 📍Gund 124 ⏰ 12-1:15pm The Mexico City Metropolitan Area — home to over 20 million inhabitants — offers a critical lens through which to examine some of the most pressing urban dynamics across Latin America: the tension between centralized planning and informal growth, the role of speculation in shaping development, and the consequences of large-scale infrastructure on territory, ecology, and communities. We are joined by architect Mauricio Ceballos, founder of MCxA and former partner at FR-EE, and urban designer Richard De Pirro, co-founder of DgL Architecture and Urban Design and Harvard GSD alumnus. Through the case of the Texcoco and Santa Lucía airport projects, the conversation will explore how a single infrastructural decision can reshape a city — and what more sustainable urban futures might look like. You are welcome to bring your lunch Hosted by Latin GSD.

CityDebate #20: Invest or Retreat? Granville Island + Sea Level Rise saw two teams face off to argue about the future of one of North America’s most successful public markets, which is at risk to be underwater by 2100. space2place founder Jeff Cutler argued that we could use the remaining years we have left to maximize the Granville Island experience at the same time artists and independent businesses are being relocated. He pointed out that long-term investment in Granville Island in any real way would necessitate the loss of its character — “the tin sheds, the low-slung market stalls, the human scale.” Watch the full debate here: https://lnkd.in/gd7AcgdJ UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture

The new issue of the Urban Design Group Journal is out. ‘Rethinking Water’ features a great article, authored by LDA Design’s Simon Railton and Stuart Holmes, about the new #reservoir in the #Fens that we are working on with Fereday Pollard for Anglian Water Services and Cambridge Water, the design for which takes a bold approach to address technical and #environmental challenges. Not only will the reservoir help to meet urgent #water storage needs in a climate-challenged part of the UK, but we also hope it will become a community asset and a fantastic place to visit. All because the project is being viewed through a wider #outcomes lens, factoring in early how it can maximise benefit to people and planet. Simon and Stuart argue that success for a vital #infrastructure project like this "should be measured not just by capacity or cost, but by the long-term #environmental, #social, and #economic value delivered. By embracing integrated design, collaboration, and clearly defined outcomes, the UK’s next generation of reservoirs, like the Fens Reservoir, can set a benchmark for infrastructure that works with people and nature: resilient, inclusive, and fit to provide greater security within the context of an uncertain future." Read on in the #UrbanDesignJournal, if you’re a supporter (or join now: https://www.udg.org.uk). We'll keep you posted as to when the issue is available online. Thank you to the Urban Design Group. #infrastructuredesign #bestoutcomes #masterplanning #landscapearchitecture #placemaking #landscapedesign #changeagents #designprocess #innovation

In dense urban environments like London, 'leftover' land can often be ignored because the complexity of the site outweighs the perceived reward. Our Liminal Housing research proves that with a scalable architectural framework, even a narrow access route or a redundant garage can be transformed into a high-quality, sustainable home. By elevating living spaces and maintaining access routes below, we unlock land that has been hidden in plain sight. We are looking to partner with landowners and developers who want to rethink the potential of their constrained sites.
