What can New York City’s pedicab problem can teach us about delivering justice in today’s world? 🚲 Half bicycle, half carriage, pedicabs carry amused families and camera-wielding tourists across the park and around Midtown, often blasting classics like “Empire State of Mind” from speakers. And they’ve been causing a stir. From pricing fraud to loud music to unlicensed vehicles, complaints about pedicabs have piled up. Our new roadmap to reform works to change that, proposing concrete steps for reforming the city’s pedicab industry and guaranteeing a safe, fair experience for everyone involved. It’s the result of a roundtable that brought together industry representatives, justice system leaders, and others to map out a path forward. In many ways, the pedicab issue illustrates the broader problems of delivering justice in a fast-paced, complex environment like New York City. NEW: New York City has a pedicab problem. In collaboration with Council Member Gale A. Brewer, Times Square Alliance, and Central Park Conservancy, we're proposing a roadmap to reform. ⬇️ From pricing fraud to unlicensed vehicles, hundreds of cases related to pedicabs cycle through the courts each year. Yet the justice system has struggled to respond effectively, leaving community members and drivers no better off. This roadmap of eight action steps for reform of NYC’s pedicab industry proposes changes including shifting oversight to the Taxi and Limousine Commission, mandating meters, and making compliance easier for drivers. 🚲 Check out the full roadmap to reform today: https://lnkd.in/esvmHXP4

A decade of campaigning pays off! We caught up with our chief exec Ros Morgan, Chris Plummer, General Manager at Transport for London, Simon Thomas, Executive Chairman at The Hippodrome Casino, Natasha Evans, Met Police Superintendent, and Claire Walker, CEO at Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre, to hear their thoughts on what the new pedicab regulations coming into effect in October 2026 mean for the West End. After more than a decade of campaigning, pedicab drivers will be required to hold a licence under a new regulatory framework with clearer standards and checks. This marks a major milestone for the West End and for London. Learn more about our advocacy work: https://lnkd.in/e3wQd9dZ

We're heading back to Sacramento tomorrow 🚨 Monday's rescheduled Transportation Committee hearing covers four bills we care about — and we'll be there to weigh in on all of them and also to visit assembly members Matt Haney, Diane Papan, Damon Connolly, Rebecca Bauer-Kahan starting at 11am 🕚. Opposing ❌: - AB 1557 (Papan) — would do serious damage to e-bikes in California and fracture the ebike movement in North America. - AB 1942 (Bauer-Kahan) — would require every Class 2 and Class 3 e-bike to be registered with the DMV and display a license plate. These are legal bicycles ridden by commuters, families, and workers — not the illegal high-powered e-motos that are the actual problem on our streets. Supporting ✅: - AB 2284 (Dixon) — directs the AG to publish a list of illegal "e-bikes" that don't meet California's legal definition. A real tool for schools and law enforcement. - AB 1569 (Davies) — requires K-12 students to complete e-bike safety training before parking on campus. We're not against regulation — we're against the wrong regulation. The real problem on our streets is illegal e-motos, and AB 2284 and AB 1569 are smart steps toward addressing it. AB 1557 and AB 1942 punish the wrong people. Timing on Monday: AB 1942 comes up 5th — expect it around 3:00–3:30 PM. AB 1557 comes up 19th — likely between 5:00 and 6:30 PM. Legislative Office Building, 1021 O Street, Room 1100. The public gets to state their name, affiliation, and position on each bill. Lawmakers need to see real people in that room — not just lobbyists. Coming? Let us know: advocacy@newwheel.net #AB1557 #AB1942 #AB2284 #AB1569 #ebikes #California #cycling #transportation #advocacy

Footway Parking: It has been reported that, following successful passage through both houses and receiving Royal Assent on 29 April, the “English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act” is now law. This gives powers to local authorities to enforce against footway parking. Schedule 7 provides for obstruction contraventions, referencing the 1835 Highways Act for the definition of pavement (footway or causeway by the side of any road … for … foot passengers). https://lnkd.in/erBvPciK

Cape Town taxi rivals CATA and CODETA say they are committed to working together to end violence and resolve disputes in the industry. The two associations met publicly at Nyanga taxi rank, where leaders said differences will remain, but killings cannot continue. After years of deadly route conflicts, they say the focus must now shift to talks, resolutions and peace. For commuters and operators alike, the real test will be whether this latest pact finally brings calm on the ground.

The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill has received Royal Assent paving the way for the introduction of strategic authorities across England, new powers for Mayoral Combined Authorities, and national standards for taxi drivers and allowing enforcement officers to suspend licences issued by other local authorities where a driver is operating outside their licensed area.. Gambling Impact Assessments will also be introduced to address the proliferation of gambling shops on the high street, so councils can prevent new gambling shops from opening. https://lnkd.in/e2q8Uutm #taxis #gambling #licensing

Today RACQ welcomed tbe follow-up report from the Parliamentary Committee on e-mobility. The Committee has addressed RACQ’s two big issues in the Bill now in Parliament - licensing and speed limits. They have recommended 10km/h should not apply to shared paths - and in fact some relaxation too on low traffic footpaths. They have also called for people with conditions who are perfectly able to ride but are unable to drive to not be excluded from e-mobility. These are common sense recommendations while still maintaining the key objective - improved safety on roads and pathway infrastructure. Well done to Jim McDonald MP and the rest of the Committee for listening and acting.
