Premium consumers and buyers pay for certified seafood rarely reaches fishers, a new Conservation International study led by Seafood Markets and Equity Program Manager Shreya Yadav found. Most of the value stays with retailers, distributors, and exporters. But here’s the thing: you can't expect people to commit to sustainable fishing in the long term if they’re not earning enough to live. Putting communities first, strengthening fishing organizations, giving fishers a real hand in managing their own resources, and addressing social inequities is key. https://lnkd.in/e2VyBw3Y

For generations, Palauans have harvested giant clams to feed their families. Today, growing demand and climate change have sent wild populations plummeting. For Tarita Holm of Conservation International Palau (Conservation International Pacific Islands), clam farming is the way forward. Last month, Conservation International-backed the opening of a community-based hatchery expected to supply local farmers with approximately 25,000 juvenile clams each year, supporting farmers and easing pressure on wild populations. Over time, farm-raised clams could also help restock reefs where they’ve disappeared. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/enbaxbSR

One of the things I love most about this work is getting to back entrepreneurs who are solving very practical problems in places where the right kind of capital can make a real difference. So I’m really happy to share that Conservation International Ventures LLC has invested in Kumbatia Seafood, a Kenya-based company working with small-scale fishing communities along the Swahili Coast. Kumbatia is focused on a set of challenges that sound straightforward, but are incredibly hard to solve well: helping fishers get better prices, reducing post-harvest losses, improving traceability, and supporting more responsible fishing practices in the process from multiple angles. For example, better handling and cold storage can mean less waste and access to higher-value markets, gear exchange and work with Beach Management Units can support better local fisheries management, and importantly, more value stays with the coastal communities doing the fishing. Congrats to the Kumbatia team — we’re excited to support what you’re building! For over two decades, the NPF Industry has been working hard to minimise the impacts of fishing on the marine environment through ongoing research, industry innovation and collaboration. From developing Australia's first Bycatch Action Plan, to achieving significant reductions in bycatch and investing heavily in critical sawfish research, their commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability remains stronger than ever. #NorthernPrawnFishery #SustainableSeafood #BycatchReduction #SustainableFishing #SustainableOceans
Nothing much happens on a Tuesday - until it does! On Tuesday evening, NPF Industry was hugely proud and very privileged to be presented with the 2026 National Seafood Industry Environment Award by the co-convenors of the Parliamentary Friends of Seafood Senator Glenn Sterle and Andrew Wallace - LNP Federal Member for Fisher at Parliament House. A bottom trawl fishery winning a national environment award is HUGE. But this is much more than just an award to us. It profiles the people, the passion, the projects and the many years of hard work that underpin Australia's iconic Northern Prawn Fishery https://lnkd.in/gFbax5xT. It's recognition that Australian trawl fisheries are some of the best-managed and most sustainable in the world. Most importantly, it shines a spotlight on the synergy between sustainable seafood production and environmental management - that synergy is at the heart of everything we do! We are very grateful to Seafood Industry Australia for the opportunity to also launch our new 'Seas of Change - Our Sustainability Journey' video which documents our ongoing efforts to reduce impacts on the marine environment and to share our sustainability story at this prestigious event. We sincerely hope this profile will help our policy and decision makers to better understand, defend and support the NPF, Australia's trawl fisheries and the right of Australian consumers to sustainable MSC-certified Australian wild-caught prawns into the future.Seafood Industry AustraliaAustralian Fisheries Management AuthorityMarine Stewardship Council (MSC)FRDC - Fisheries Research and Development Corporationhttps://lnkd.in/gFbax5xT. “The ocean hasn't been this warm in at least 12,000 years.” 🌊 As a “mega” El Niño threatens to rewrite weather systems around the world, communities, economies, and ecosystems could all feel the effects. The good news? According to Conservation International experts Lee Hannah and Isaac Brito-Morales, PhD, we can prepare. Looking to the past — including the massive 1997 El Niño — and using climate science can help us anticipate what’s next and build resilience for people and nature. After two years of rigorous research and global stakeholder collaboration, the Social Responsibility Assessment Tool for the Seafood Sector (SRA) 2.0 is now live on the refreshed Roadmap for Improving Seafood Ethics (RISE) platform, setting a new benchmark for how companies assess and address human and labor rights risks in seafood supply chains. As human rights due diligence becomes a global imperative, SRA 2.0 and the RISE platform offer seafood buyers and suppliers a clear, credible, and actionable path to identify risks, implement improvements and champion the rights of workers and seafood-dependent communities across the sector. Forests Are Food Systems Forests are far more than just timber reserves or environmental conservation zones, they are an essential pillar of global food security. A joint global report by the FAO and the Landscape Alliance, Forests for Food: Nourishing People, Sustaining the Planet, highlights how forest ecosystems directly sustain human health, rural livelihoods, and agricultural resilience. Over 50,000 wild species are used globally for food, medicine, and basic necessities, with at least 10,000 species directly consumed as food. For many forest-dependent and rural communities, wild forest foods, ranging from native fruits, leafy greens, and mushrooms to wild meat and freshwater fish, are not just supplementary. They provide up to 80% of daily protein needs and nearly half of the total food consumed by weight. Beyond direct nutrition, forests supply up to 20% of household income in poor rural areas, giving families the purchasing power needed to afford diverse diets. Forests also quietly underpin the broader agricultural system. They host pollinators that support 35% of global crop production, protect watersheds that supply clean water to over 85% of major cities, and buffer crops from severe weather events. Additionally, roughly 1.8 billion people rely on woodfuel to cook their meals, and 410 million use it to sterilize drinking water. Despite these massive contributions, forest foods remain largely invisible in national food security policies and economic metrics. To protect both local communities and global biodiversity, we need to shift our perspective. This means establishing clear operational definitions for forest foods, securing land tenure rights for local and Indigenous communities, and breaking down policy silos between agriculture, forestry, and public health. Integrating sustainable forest management directly into global food strategies is essential if we want to build a truly resilient, well-nourished world. Ecuador is scoring points against climate change. Through a Green Climate Fund–Conservation International partnership, communities, government institutions, and private-sector actors are coming together to safeguard Ecuador’s mangroves while supporting sustainable coastal development. A new agreement will restore 250 hectares of mangrove inside shrimp-farming operations by 2030 — helping cut an estimated 112,000 tonnes of CO₂. This is what climate ambition looks like when it’s backed by investment, partnerships and action on the ground. Read more: https://lnkd.in/em8TqY67
