What inspires someone to become a nurse? For Nathan Schloegl, it was the team who showed up for his family during their most vulnerable moment. When his son Luca was admitted to the NICU at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, the nurses' compassion and steadiness didn't just help his baby. It redirected his entire career path. He left his job in private security, went back to school, and today works as a nurse in the very same NICU where Luca was once a patient. This #InternationalNursesDay, we recognize the lasting impact nurses have on patients and their families - and the people they inspire to join their ranks.
My daughter‘s experience as a cardiac patient at nine years old is what inspired her. Sadly, what has uninspired her is the wait list to get in at local colleges and she’s changed her planned major going into college next year.
My son had open heart surgery at 9. I was starting college and his diagnosis guided me into nursing.
