Great day out in Indiana working through real-world electric vehicle fire scenarios and getting hands-on with a variety of water application tools. 💦 We also had the chance to get out back on the fireground props and put theory into action—running through hands-on evolutions to demonstrate key tactics in real time. From undercarriage attacks targeting the battery compartment… To interior fire control and cooling strategies… To flowing and positioning water effectively to manage heat, gases, and fire spread… Yesterday was all about building options for crews on scene. When you’re dealing with lithium-ion batteries and evolving vehicle technology, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. You need to understand your tools, your flow, and your tactics—and be ready to adapt based on conditions in front of you. What an incredible couple of days working alongside multiple fire departments across the Ottawa Valley, diving deep into electric vehicle & lithium-ion battery fire response. From theory to hands-on evolutions, crews got after it and explored real-world tactics that are changing how we approach EV incidents: 🔥 Undercarriage application using built-in apparatus capabilities 🔥 Piercing nozzles to directly target battery compartments 🔥 Smooth bore & cellar nozzles for deep-seated cooling and reach 🔥 Ground ladders & elevated streams for top-down cooling access 🔥 Large-volume water flow (“know your flow”) to control thermal runaway We also broke down tool selection and decision-making on the fireground: ✔️ When to cool vs. contain ✔️ Understanding battery location and construction ✔️ Using what’s already on your truck before reaching for specialty tools ✔️ Coordinating tactics for long-duration incidents This is the reality of today’s fire service—adapting, evolving, and getting reps in before the call comes in.
