The AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) 2025 Annual Symposium features an impressive program over the next five days. Health systems globally are in need of innovative ways to deliver health services, and the biomedical informatics profession plays a key role in health system transformation. Darius Lakdawalla, a Cornerstone Research affiliated expert and chief scientific officer of the USC Schaeffer Institute, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Experts elected to the Academy are recognized for their significant contributions to the medical sciences, healthcare, and public health. Professor Lakdawalla was selected as one of one hundred new members for his groundbreaking work in transforming how the economic value of medical innovation is calculated. When does published research become evidence based practice? As a researcher, and huge fan of peer review publication, I came across the attached publication below. It’s a 2023 publication on Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter (ONSD) to measure raised ICP. I was interested as I published a very similar paper in the Emergency Medical Journal in 2011: https://lnkd.in/evne-52y After many debates, across many research themes, when can we stop researching something and accept it as ‘evidence based’? What level of evidence do you feel comfortable accepting to adopt into your daily practice? This is has been an often debated topic in OHCA resuscitation science, where advanced life support guidelines/international consensus can be years behind research, or expect a level of evidence quality which is unachievable (particualrly regarding pre-hospital OHCA). ECMO/ECLS is a good example where the basic science is undeniable but adoption understandably slow, due to cost and implementation challenges (although ‘lack of evidence’ is often cited as a reason for delay rather than honesty about the sizeable logistical and cost challenges which make it an intervention only for richer healthcare systems and area codes). I think the ONSD question has been thoroughly answered. It does correlate with ICP. Does it correlate with neurosurgical intervention, independent of CT result, is another question, which I suspect the answer to is no. How many observational studies, what level of evidence, what questions need answering for you to adopt research into practice without a NICE guidline or international consensus statement to ‘give you top cover’?

Not because of lack of curiosity, but because the structure to turn ideas into research simply isn’t there. 📊 The data tell the story: • Only 14% of physicians are actively involved in any form of research. • In the U.S., just 1.3% list research as their main professional activity. • Fewer than 3% regularly participate in clinical trials. That means most of the people who see patients, collect stories, and witness real-world outcomes firsthand… are not contributing to the scientific record. WIMR supports the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) campaign to release the full Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF). The MRFF was established to provide $1 billion annually to support Australian medical research. Currently, only $650 million is being released, limiting programs, prompting researchers to leave, and slowing critical discoveries. Australian researchers are among the most productive and cost-efficient globally, yet their ability to advance health outcomes is constrained by funding that already exists. 📊 New Research: The Perception Gap New findings from the Association of Multisite Research Corporations (AMRC) reveal that while Multisite Clinical Research Corporations (MCRCs) consistently deliver: ✅ Faster study start-up ✅ Stronger operational consistency ✅ Higher staff retention …they’re still often overlooked in favour of academic centres based on legacy perceptions of “quality.” Across 23 operational areas, MCRCs performed almost on par with Academic Medical Centres (AMCs). Yet, they were rarely rated “excellent” for quality overall. This perception gap matters. If operational excellence isn’t recognised as quality, the industry risks undervaluing the very models that enable faster, more reliable, and more inclusive trials.
