Sound design tip: Play games, and take notes. While I'm not the biggest fan of Epic games' store front, I can't lie that I love the free stuff they give away. It's a great way to expose myself to games I wouldn't normally choose to play. It also allows me a risk-free way of trying out all sorts of games in different genres. Indie, AAA, AA, old, new. I love listening to how different games handle UI, ambience, chaos management, and other problems unique to their genre. So go play some games! Study what others are doing.

Weekends are a very common period for playtests, especially in indie games. While I’m anticipating an upcoming playtest this weekend, I found myself reflecting on the many playtests I’ve participated in over the years, both from a Player Experience perspective and as a player. One thing I’ve consistently learned when working with player sentiment is that most playtests don’t fail because of bugs or technical errors. They tend to break when the gameplay, the purpose of the test, or its goals aren’t clearly communicated. When players don’t understand what they’re there to do or why it matters, confusion sets in fast. What is the playtest actually trying to validate? Server stability? New features? Bug discovery? General feedback? Overall sentiment? Good playtests aren’t about collecting feedback in isolation. They rely on clear direction and framing. When players feel guided, respected, and curious, they’re far more likely to stay engaged and look forward to what comes next. Playtests are one of those moments where turning early chaos into clarity makes all the difference. At this early stage, trust is already being shaped. And trust is the most fragile asset in development. Once it’s lost, it takes a long time to rebuild.
