How do tax-benefit systems impact people’s life satisfaction? Our latest paper, supported via #TSI, explores how tax‑benefit systems play a significant role in shaping differences in people’s subjective well‑being across European countries. The findings show that while higher taxes alone are associated with lower life satisfaction, citizens in countries with effective governments experience higher overall life satisfaction. It also reveals that lower-income households tend to report higher life satisfaction when they receive more support through benefit, while higher-income households that pay more taxes report only slightly lower life satisfaction. This suggests that inclusive tax-benefit systems can enhance overall life satisfaction if accompanied by good governance quality.
