“We really want people to be aware of what’s going on so that they don’t fall out of compliance and risk any future funding,” says University Librarian Matthew Covey. The NIH Public Access Policy, which went into effect on July 1, 2025, has a noble goal: to make publicly funded research available to everyone as soon as it’s published in a peer-reviewed journal. But as the publishing landscape slowly shifts towards open access, many researchers are finding themselves between a rock and a hard place. That’s because while the NIH requires the embargo-free deposit of NIH-funded articles into PubMed Central (PMC) immediately after publication, many scientific journals have embargo policies that require authors to keep their findings under wraps for as long as a year—and the journals often own the copyright. What is a scientist who wants to stay in the good graces of both federal funders and private publishers to do? Here are some of the most important steps Covey recommends authors should take—and a couple of pitfalls to avoid.

A much needed discussion: a good part of the research grants now go to publishing open access and researchers from countries with less investments in science suffer the most. But the problem gets worse than that... APCs for open access actually increased the profit of the publishers. https://lnkd.in/gRS4fVym

The future of academic publishing depends on removing barriers, not adding them. At Pinnacle Science, we are actively identifying and partnering with industry leaders who want to help open the door to Diamond Open Access, where authors and readers pay nothing, and high-quality science remains freely accessible to everyone. Industry partnerships are not about influencing outcomes or shaping results. They are about supporting infrastructure, visibility, and sustainability so that rigorous, peer-reviewed research can reach clinicians, practitioners, researchers, and students without financial friction. For industry partners, this model offers: • Direct exposure to a highly targeted professional audience • Transparent, ethical brand visibility alongside peer-reviewed science • Long-term return on investment through trusted academic alignment • Support for open science without compromising editorial independence For the research community, it means: • No article processing charges • Broader dissemination and citation potential • Faster translation of research into practice Diamond Open Access is not a future concept, it is a necessary evolution. Strategic industry collaboration is how we get there responsibly. If your organization values science, transparency, and meaningful impact, let’s start the conversation. #OpenAccess #DiamondOpenAccess #AcademicPublishing #IndustryPartnerships #OpenScience #ResearchImpact #PinnacleScience

➡️ A clickable visual abstract can significantly increase article visibility on social media. In a randomized crossover study published in JAMA, researchers compared three post formats across 12 JAMA Network journals: – linking visual abstracts – expandable visual abstracts – article figures Posts with linking visual abstracts generated twice as many link clicks (median 18 vs 9). Expandable visual abstracts, in contrast, performed better for reach and engagement. The takeaway is clear: format choice should align with your communication goal, traffic or visibility. At Alpen Scientific Communications, we design visual abstracts grounded in evidence, combining clarity, precision and compliance to support effective scientific dissemination. 📚 Reference: Trueger NS et al., JAMA (2023) #SciComm #ScientificCommunication #MedicalWriting #Publications #MedicalAffairs #VisualAbstracts

📣 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 We’re excited to announce that Openjournals, in collaboration with the Diamond Open Access Expertise Center, will soon launch a survey among editorial boards of all Diamond Open Access journals in the Netherlands. Diamond Open Access as a publishing model is gaining momentum. Over recent years, the number of journals offering free access for readers and no publication costs for authors has grown significantly. With this survey, we aim to better understand how Diamond OA journals operate, the challenges they face, and the values and practices that shape this community. To further develop successful Diamond Open Access publishing infrastructures, we need the input from editors. The survey is an opportunity for them to indicate what support they need and how Diamond Open Access can be strengthened in the Netherlands. ❓To start the conversation, we’d love to hear your perspective: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 – 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆? Did you know ResearchGate used to use very different metrics than it does now? Long-time users might remember when ResearchGate displayed an "RG Impact Factor" for journals—a metric they no longer use. But have you ever wondered why that specific metric was removed? The landscape of academic metrics is constantly evolving, and accuracy is everything. Back in 2016, I published a #study titled "ResearchGate is no longer reliable: Leniency towards ghost journals may decrease its impact on the scientific community." In this #paper, I highlighted a critical flaw in the system: the platform's leniency towards "ghost journals" (predatory journals). These journals often displayed misleading or "magical" impact factors, which skewed the data and threatened the reliability of the platform for serious researchers. The shift away from these older journal metrics was a necessary step to maintain scientific integrity and combat the rise of predatory publishing. If you are interested in the history of these metrics and the impact of ghost journals on scientific platforms, you can read my full study here: 👇 https://lnkd.in/gRjZ3CaV #ResearchGate #AcademicPublishing #Scientometrics #ImpactFactor #GhostJournals #PredatoryJournals #ScienceComm #Research #ResearchImpact #OpenScience #ResearchIntegrity #PhD #JournalMetrics #EarlyCareerResearcher #SciencePolicy #AcademicChatter #PublicationEthics #ScholarlyPublishing #PublicationEthics #Publishing #Research

🔔 Major, Widely Cited Elsevier Q1 Journal Removed from Web of Science, Losing Its Impressive Impact Factor Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN), long regarded as a top-tier Q1 environmental science journal, has been officially removed from Clarivate’s Web of Science Core Collection, resulting in the loss of its Impact Factor and indexing status. The journal was placed “on hold” in late 2024 following serious concerns related to peer-review manipulation, fake reviewer identities, and conflicts of interest. Despite its previously high citation metrics and massive publication volume, Clarivate concluded that STOTEN no longer met required editorial and research-integrity standards, leading to its formal delisting in November 2025. While this post comes a little late, this case underscores a critical message for the global research community: high Impact Factor does not guarantee high integrity. Even flagship journals are subject to increasing scrutiny as publishers, indexers, and funders place greater emphasis on transparent peer review, editorial responsibility, and research quality. 📌 Source: https://lnkd.in/dZRHqWH7 #DaWenSun #AcademicPublishing #ResearchIntegrity #WebOfScience #Clarivate #ImpactFactor #Elsevier #ScholarlyCommunication

Rising Publication Costs Strain Researchers "[Daniel] Weinberger said that, if the NIH puts some form of restrictions on funding for publishing in place, it will likely force researchers to decide how much they want to publish in journals with high APCs if publishers don’t reduce their costs. He added that the proposal makes the present moment an ideal time to address publishing and how the community evaluates it. “There's a lot of interest in finding better solutions here, and I think it's just a matter of needing to organize people to settle and agree on what those solutions are.” Read more at The Scientist here: https://lnkd.in/eQWkDkWc #OpenAccess #Publishing #Research #Academia
