Rethinking Predatory Publishing 🚩 Scholarly publishing isn't as simple as "Good Journals" vs. "Bad Journals." This paper, "Revisiting the Term Predatory Open Access Publishing," highlights three uncomfortable truths about the current research landscape: 🔹 The "Grey" Zone: Distinguishing between a predatory journal and a legitimate, low-resource emerging journal from a developing country is becoming increasingly difficult. 🔹 The "Symbiosis": It’s not always predation. There is often a mutual benefit where researchers get quick publications to boost numbers, and publishers get paid. 🔹 Big Publisher Issues: Predatory practices aren't limited to small operations. Evidence suggests established publishers are also susceptible to accepting bogus papers or prioritizing profits over quality. A must-read for early-career researchers navigating the publication process: https://lnkd.in/gXzXg5dp #PublicHealth #Research #AcademicTwitter #Publishing #ScienceIntegrity

📚 Publishing in Journals: From Idea to Acceptance Publishing in reputable journals can feel like navigating a maze. Many researchers struggle with selecting the right journal, structuring their manuscript, and handling reviewer feedback. Having guided faculty and researchers through this process, I’ve learned a few key strategies that make a real difference. 1️⃣ Choose the Right Journal It’s not just about impact factor. Make sure your research aligns with the journal’s scope and recent publications. The right fit increases acceptance chances and ensures your work reaches the right audience. 2️⃣ Craft a Clear Manuscript Clarity wins. Strong theoretical framing, clear methodology, and concise discussion make your manuscript easier to read—and more likely to impress reviewers. Avoid unnecessary jargon. 3️⃣ Embrace Feedback Reviewer comments aren’t personal; they’re an opportunity to strengthen your work. Address comments systematically, provide reasoned responses, and politely explain any choices you don’t adopt. 4️⃣ Strategic Revisions Revisions are more than edits. They’re a chance to refine arguments, highlight contributions, and polish presentation. Small details like formatting and referencing matter. 5️⃣ Think Long-Term Publishing is a journey. Build a pipeline of ideas, improve your writing continuously, and nurture relationships with editors and peers. Over time, this strategy boosts visibility, impact, and credibility. ✅ Final Thought Successful publishing combines rigorous research, strategic planning, and persistence. Every challenge is an opportunity to improve your work and grow as a researcher. If you’re navigating the publishing process and want guidance on manuscript development, journal targeting, and reviewer responses, I’d be happy to share tips and support your journey. #AcademicPublishing #ResearchTips #ManuscriptWriting #JournalSuccess

𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆. Here is a simple way to decide: 𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 • Choose high-impact journals for long-term growth, career progression, and stronger academic reputation. • Choose fast-publishing journals if you need quick visibility or are working with strict deadlines. 𝟮. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 • High-impact journals usually have lower acceptance rates and higher prestige. • Fast-publishing journals offer quicker turnaround times and moderate indexing. 𝟯. 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 • High-impact journals involve detailed and rigorous peer review. • Fast-publishing journals usually require lighter and faster revisions. 𝟰. 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 • Always verify journal legitimacy through Scimago or DOAJ. • Look for transparent editorial teams and clear peer-review policies. 𝟱. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 • If prestige matters most, choose high-impact journals. • If time is critical, choose fast-publishing journals. • If you want balance, consider hybrid options like Springer Open. 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳: • Does the journal fit your research scope? • Can you afford the publication fee? • Is it indexed in Scopus or Web of Science? There is no single perfect journal. 🔍 A common misunderstanding about Open Access publishing In project interviews, evaluations, and research assessments, I often hear the following argument: “We had to publish in this journal because Open Access was mandatory.” This reflects a widespread misunderstanding of what Open Access actually means. Open Access is not limited to so-called Open Access journals. Most established publishers, including Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, and others, operate hybrid journals. In these journals, authors can choose to make their articles Open Access by paying an Article Processing Charge (APC), even though the journal itself is subscription-based. In other words, if the APC is paid, an article published in a traditional journal can be just as Open Access as one published in a fully Open Access journal. Therefore, Open Access requirements do not justify publishing in controversial or academically marginal venues. Open Access is a publishing option, not a constraint on journal quality, editorial standards, or peer-review rigor. The real issue is not “Open Access versus traditional journals”, but the choice of credible venues that maintain high academic standards while allowing Open Access when required. A clear understanding of this mechanism is important for researchers, reviewers, and evaluators, so that Open Access policies are applied correctly and not misunderstood or misused in research assessment. Open Access is a publishing model, not an excuse. #DaWenSun #OpenAccess #AcademicPublishing #ResearchEvaluation #ResearchIntegrity
