The F126 program was meant to serve as the foundation of Germany’s future naval combat capabilities — so where did it go wrong? In a new brief for #CISES, Valentin Graf von Plettenberg-Lenhausen discusses how the F126 program became a liability, and how the German Navy can take action to mitigate a rapidly widening capability gap while its NATO maritime commitments come under increasing strain. The brief argues that, despite the political and reputational costs, the F126 program should no longer be regarded as the future backbone of the German fleet, and that an alternate strategy is necessary to restore credible naval combat power. Aircraft carriers have anchored naval warfare since WWII, when over 20 fought in Pacific battles. During the Cold War, they served as global deterrents, rarely massed in one theater. The Gulf War saw six U.S. carriers—the largest modern Middle East deployment. Post‑9/11 wars used fewer but more advanced carriers. Today’s Iran conflict could see up to five carriers deployed, fewer than past peaks but far more capable due to modern aircraft and precision systems. #AircraftCarriers #CarrierStrikeGroup #NavalWarfare #IranConflict #MilitaryHistory
