hey positive tribes 😊 here my recent certification from openlearn Course summary This course will present an overview of the policy and law that relates to social work with people involved in the asylum and immigration system and will introduce you to the ways in which social work practitioners can support people with insecure immigration status, refugees and asylum seekers more effectively. It will highlight some of the realities of asylum and immigration in England, Wales,Scotland and Northern Ireland today. Learning outcomes By completing this course, the learner should be able to: appreciate why social workers need to know about asylum and immigration law understand what it means to be a refugee identify the rights asylum seekers have recognise the support available, as well as barriers to migrants, asylum seekers and refugees accessing services recognise how an understanding of the law and social work values promotes best practice when working with migrants, asylum seekers and refugees.

To be very vocal, I think the Regulations Amending the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (Designated Learning Institutions): SOR/2024-219 represent harmful regulation. Understanding it is targetted at fraud, it will also impact students who need to switch institutions urgently due to mental health crises, sexual abuse/assault, or circumstances that may rise outside of their control. Students will go out of compliance seeking to comply. That is illogical. There is no reason a request process to handle these changes (which we didn't really have, but could have) rather than issuing new SPs, especially where there are bona fide circumstances is much more minimally impairing. I am not sure why also, this regulation didn't go through a revised Part 1 for regulatory feedback (but perhaps someone smarter than me can answer that). Where we stand now, at the very least we need a list of policy carveouts to capture bona fide, precarious, and important situations as stated above. This is when I started working with students from Haiti, Central America and the Caribbean as director of and teacher in the CASS (Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships) program at the University of Maine. This was a USAID program to help students learn English and get two-year degrees to aid in their countries' development. Migration must be understood as emigration, immigration, and integration. All factors are deeply interconnected and recursive, not just linear. That is why several of the last administrations have been working on the development of sending countries. This is a long game, interconnected big picture. We cannot divide this out and say, "We will look at helping other countries develop after we have finished enforcing our immigration laws." We need long-range multi-faceted, investment in health and education even as we examine immigration and citizenship law, with immigration enforcement as one highly contextualized component. Students granted a study permit should commit to their chosen institution, and if they wish to transfer, a new study permit should be required. So many thoughts - what if immigration and education were more aligned? What if education was more solidly included in resettlement conversations?
