The EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement is expected to boost EU agri-food exports to Mercosur by 50% thanks to: 🔹 Removing high tariffs and burdensome procedures, a competitive advantage against other countries which will keep facing prohibitive Mercosur tariffs 🔹 Enhancing market position for traditional EU food products by protecting them from imitation At the same time, it protects Europe’s farmers: 🔹 It limits the amount of sensitive agri-food products that Mercosur countries can export to the EU with lower tariffs 🔹 The EU can impose safeguard measures in case of a surge in EU agri-food imports from Mercosur - and a dedicated regulation, already adopted by the Council, enhances this protection 🔹 A new Unity Safety Net, with a total capacity of 6.3 billion euros, doubles the current agricultural reserve in case of crises 🔹 No agri-food products from Mercosur can enter the EU if they do not respect all the EU’s high health and safety standards - with increased Commission audits and checks in third countries and stronger controls on the ground and at the EU border 🔹The European Commission has launched impact assessments on a potential alignment of production standards on pesticides and animal welfare Find out more 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d3p-yvZ5 #EUTrade #Mercosur

The blocking of Mercosur is deeply frustrating. At a time when Europe urgently needs positive signals for cooperation and progress, this agreement could have been exactly that. Instead, internal political conflicts and ideological rigidity have once again prevented the EU from moving forward in a pragmatic way. A handful of voices should not be able to derail years of diplomatic work and a strategic opportunity for Europe. Decisions like this only strengthen nationalist narratives and reinforce the perception that Brussels is unable to act decisively when it matters most.

The EU–Mercosur Partnership Agreement is a positive step with high economic potential. From a regulatory perspective, cooperation must be underpinned by robust enforcement, data integrity, and sound assessments at border and market levels. Trust in EU food safety standards will ultimately depend on consistent verification to ensure EU requirements are fully implemented across all partners.

🌍 Trade with Teeth: Market Access Without Compromising Standards 🚨 The EU–Mercosur agreement is a strong signal of next-generation trade policy: opening markets while firmly anchoring EU standards, safeguards, and compliance. Boosting exports through tariff removal, protecting geographical indications, and reinforcing safety, sustainability, and crisis mechanisms shows that competitiveness and resilience are no longer trade - offs - they are strategic complements. #EUTrade #Mercosur #GlobalTrade #TradePolicy #Compliance #SupplyChains #ExecutiveInsights
