Global Engagement has received a $15,000 Strategic Internationalization Grant from the Texas International Education Fund (TIEF) through TIEC. The grant will help launch the Global Leadership Initiative, a nine-month professional development program designed to strengthen global engagement leadership among faculty and staff across the Texas A&M University System. Funding will support the program’s structured learning sessions, collaborative capstone project and immersive experience, providing participants with practical skills, peer connections and opportunities to advance international education. This award recognizes Global Engagement’s commitment to building leadership capacity, expanding cross-institutional collaboration and preparing the next generation of global engagement leaders. What if one of the strongest answers to educator retention is already inside the organisation? Alice Micklewright started at Little Scholars' first Yatala campus as an assistant educator in 2015. Eleven years later, she is a Regional Manager and Quality Practice Partner, supporting campus leaders and educators across 17 campuses in Southeast Queensland. But Alice's career wasn't built through one dramatic promotion. It grew through mentoring, leadership development, professional learning, conferences, study support and, importantly, leaders who continued to ask: what comes next? As Early Childhood Educators' Day approaches, Alice's story offers a timely perspective on the ECEC workforce and educator retention conversation. Attracting talented people into early childhood education and care is only part of the challenge. Keeping them requires something more. For educators who want to progress, career pathways need to be visible. Professional development needs to extend beyond a once-a-year exercise. Potential needs to be recognised before an educator necessarily sees it in themselves. And there is another benefit to long-term career development: continuity. When experienced educators stay and progress into early childhood leadership, they take with them an understanding of children, families, teams, service culture and the realities of practice that is difficult to replicate. Perhaps recognition shouldn't only be about thanking educators for the work they do today. It should also be about showing them the career they could have tomorrow. A wonderful career journey and a great example of what can happen when educators are supported to grow. While not everyone aspires to climb the organisational ladder, every educator should have opportunities to develop. An assistant educator who loves their role should still have access to meaningful professional development and mentorship to deepen their knowledge, strengthen their practice and feel fulfilled. Career growth doesn’t always require a new title.

The world is changing faster than ever. But are we preparing young people for the world they’re actually going to live in? Grades and academics matter. But the real world doesn’t always come with a textbook, a right answer or a clear path. Young people also need the confidence to make decisions, take risks, solve problems and learn through real experiences. That’s the gap we saw. And that’s why we started Generation Purple. At Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technology (NEAAAT), preparing students for future workforce success requires pairing academic excellence with essential interpersonal competencies. Last week, our 5th-grade cohorts focused on "The NEAAAT Way"—engaging in active learning around effective communication, strategic teamwork, and constructive conflict resolution. We were honored to host the team from Arrow Counseling and Wellness in Coach Weishampel’s classroom. Their interactive session gave students practical tools for peer collaboration while introducing them to vital career opportunities within the mental health and wellness sector. Early exposure to diverse occupational fields, combined with leadership development, remains a cornerstone of our mission. Thank you to Arrow Counseling and Wellness for investing in our students and supporting our educational community.

We are so fortunate to have this school in our community. When kids graduate from NEAAAT, they are prepared for life in the real world. Project-based learning translates well into working in a team setting and is industry-agnostic.

Last evening, I had the pleasure of facilitating a conversation with student leaders from the Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP) about mentorship. Together, we explored what it means to mentor first-year students and, more importantly, how to move from meaningful conversation to intentional action. I appreciated the student leaders’ openness as they reflected on their experiences and the challenges first-year students face.
