That was a Labour Day Game for the books! 🏈 💚🏆 Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club Inc. I enjoyed hosting Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army | Armée canadienne and his wonderful wife and team for the Labour Day Classic. It was a great way to show our appreciation for the work our military does and the exciting times ahead as we invest in our soveriegn capabilities through our supply chains and grow the strength of our military. 🪖 It’s important we continue to build relationships and show the strength we are building in Saskatchewan and through Indigenous business. It’s also important that we have a good time doing this work and make some memories and it doesn’t get any better than a Rider overtime win at the Labour Day Classic! 📣Showing up BIG at this year’s CANSEC with our Marshall Land Systems team as Canada’s Largest Indigenous Manufacturer! 🛡️ It was a whirlwind week with great conversations, connections and advancement of our business with partners and customers. ♥️Thank you to my team for all their work on preparation and management of our booth that at times felt like a very busy house party with everyone coming and going. Day one had me standing and chatting for 7.5hrs straight and I truly appreciate the conversations and introductions to new people I am meeting in the industry! A few interesting and funny observations: 1. Faster conversations on Day 1 and deeper conversations on Day 2. Lock in during the evening with receptions and an opportunity for us to enjoy getting to know everyone more socially. 🚦 2. A few colleagues and friends overheard grumbling of conversations about having to include Indigenous content/participation. To that, I would say take some time to educate and build relationships. Yes it takes a bit more time but look at those Indigenous businesses that have shown up, they have capability and interest come find us and let’s navigate some unique opportunities together! 🫱🏼🫲🏽 3. It was a rare occurrence to see a line up for men’s washrooms vs women’s, and yes I now know how it feels to have to wait in line and have an audience watching and waiting for you to hurry up! 🤣🤣🤣 4. Wear good shoes, hydrate and bring extra cards! We didn’t enter the defence sector to be a checkbox; we stepped in to be owners, partners, and long-term builders. 💡Reconciliation in Action: From Entrepreneurship to Enterprise It was a great morning sharing our knowledge and experience in the Indigenous investment space at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Future of Business Conference in Ottawa this week! Had the pleasure of talking Economic Reconciliation with Duncan McCue from CBC, Jenn Harper from Cheekbone Beauty Cosmetics INC and Steve Berna from National Bank of Canada. I enjoyed being able to share our story about Flowing River Capital’s acquisition of Marshall Land Systems and what our new model means for Nations who wish to utilize our investment experience to grow their portfolio of investments with our team being the lead. Some key takeaways: ✅ Policies on capital need to include Indigenous entrepreneurs and not just communities as 93% of our own Canadian economy is made up of entrepreneurs, yet 95% of capital is only made available to Indigenous communities and 100% of loan guarantees are only for community. ✅ We need to move from checking the box with Indigenous businesses just showing up on one time contracts using JV’s and instead should put more emphasis on true Indigenous owned businesses that are building capacity, assets and intellectual property. Moving beyond boom and bust projects. ✅ Capacity building still needs to be the focus of non-Indigenous business to ensure they are more educated on Indigenous issues and barriers in our economy so we can build solutions that work. ✅ Relationships are key to building business and supply chains. The more we know about each other the more we will know how to work with one another.
