Most consultants stay stuck because they focus on what the screen does. Architects focus on why the business needs it and how the whole system reacts. Here’s the gap I see every day: ⸻ Consultants think: “Is this config correct?” Architects think: “If I change this, what happens in FI, MM, PP, CO… and the business tomorrow?” ⸻ Consultants ask: “What’s the T-code?” Architects ask: “What’s the process? Who triggers it? What data flows through it?” ⸻ Consultants close tickets. Architects design behaviour — systems, processes, outcomes. ⸻ Consultants know modules. Architects know integration, constraints, risks, and business intent. ⸻ Over the years, on every project — greenfield, rollout, support — I’ve learned one thing: Architects aren’t born. They are shaped by curiosity and consequences. If you want to move into architecture, start practising these 5 habits: 1️⃣ Think end-to-end, not screen to screen. 2️⃣ Understand master data deeply — it’s the backbone of every failure. 3️⃣ Learn how SAP posts in FI, CO, and logistics. 4️⃣ Challenge assumptions. Don’t accept requirements blindly. 5️⃣ Document thinking → Design → Impact → Alternatives. This shift took my own career to the next level. ⸻ Architecture is not a destination. I quickly realized SAP isn’t just about settings in SPRO—it’s about solving real business problems. The best SAP consultants don’t just know the system. They understand the business impact of every decision. Here’s what separates a great consultant from just another SAP resource: -> Business Process Knowledge Matters SAP supports businesses, not the other way around. If you work in SAP SD, you need to know order-to-cash beyond the system. - How do sales teams operate? - What challenges do they face? - Where does SAP fit in? -> Always Ask "Why?" Before making a configuration change, ask yourself: - Why does the business need this? - What will change in daily operations? - Will it impact finance, inventory, or customer service? A simple pricing condition might seem like just another setting. For the business? It could mean millions in revenue impact. -> Be a Problem Solver, Not Just a Configurator SAP implementations fail when consultants focus only on system setup. Step into the business user’s shoes: - Why is the customer asking for this report? - What decision will they make with this data? - Is there a simpler way to achieve the same outcome? 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟭 – 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 - Master ABAP basics: Reports, ALV, BAPIs, BDC, Smartforms, User Exits. - Build a habit of reading SAP documentation. - Explore Eclipse-based ADT & modern ABAP syntax. - Learn how to debug effectively — it’s your best teacher. - Deliver on time, ask questions, and learn from reviews. - Get Certified in any C_ABAP course. 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟮 – 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 & 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 - Start working with OOP ABAP, Enhancements, and IDOCs. - Understand the basics of Data Dictionary & performance tuning. - Get exposure to functional modules – MM, SD, FI – ask to shadow seniors. - Start learning SAP Fiori & CDS Views. - Begin contributing to internal code reviews or knowledge sharing. 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟯 – 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 & 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 - Learn about S/4HANA and what’s changed (ABAP on HANA). - Get comfortable with Core Data Services (CDS), AMD, and REST APIs. - Collaborate with functional consultants more deeply. - Work on at least 1 implementation or upgrade project. - Learn version control (Git) & basics of agile/devops in SAP. - Witw any E_ABAP or P_ABAP certification exam, if available. 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟰 – 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 - Mentor new ABAPers — teaching will sharpen your own skills. - Deep dive into architecture: how backend integrates with UI5, SAP Gateway. - Explore BTP, CAP, Event-driven architecture. - Think in terms of business outcomes, not just code. - Work with multiple modules and understand business processes end-to-end. - Write a BTP or Solution Architecture certification exam. 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟱 – 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘇𝗲 & 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 - Choose your niche: Fiori Developer? Technical Architect? S/4HANA Migration Expert? - Get certified in your chosen path. - Build a strong GitHub/portfolio of reusable components or frameworks. - Speak at events or write blogs — become a known name. - Learn soft skills – leadership, stakeholder communication, solution storytelling. Adapt & thrive. -Shift your focus from heavy customization to mastering configuration within the clean core framework. -Advise clients on best practices for maintaining a clean core ERP system, ensuring they get the most out of their S/4HANA investment. -Keep abreast of the latest updates & features in S/4HANA to provide the most current & relevant advice. 4. Evolve with the Industry The traditional SAP consulting model is evolving. So should you. -Commit to lifelong learning & stay updated with the latest SAP technologies & industry trends. -Expand your expertise to include emerging technologies like blockchain, IoT, & advanced analytics. -Join SAP communities, attend conferences, & collaborate with other professionals to stay connected & informed.
