    I’ve mentored hundreds of students and early-career professionals, and there’s one truth I come back to every time: Your skill is not the problem. Your positioning is. I’ve seen brilliant people — leaders on campus, problem-solvers, builders, quiet strategists — get overlooked repeatedly. Not because they weren’t qualified, but because no one taught them how opportunity actually reads readiness. Here’s the reset every young professional needs: 1️⃣ Your résumé is a strategy document — not a design project Clarity beats creativity every time. Recruiters scan, they don’t study. • Use clean formatting. No photos. No fancy fonts. • Lead with action verbs and outcomes, not duties. • Quantify impact wherever possible — numbers make value visible. If your work can’t be understood in seconds, it will be skipped. 2️⃣ Your cover letter is about alignment — not autobiography Employers are not asking for your life story. They are asking whether you solve their problem. • Use the job description as your guide. • Reflect their language and priorities. • Be specific about how you add value. Three paragraphs. Maximum. Relevance matters more than passion. 3️⃣ Interviews are evidence reviews — not vibe checks Confidence is not personality. Confidence is preparation. • Know your story and your impact. • Use structure when you speak — Situation, Task, Action, Result. • Always come prepared with thoughtful questions. Interviews reward clarity, not improvisation. 4️⃣ LinkedIn is your digital first impression Visibility is not ego. It is stewardship. • Use a professional, current photo. • Write a headline that explains what you do, not just where you study or work. • Document every project, role, and leadership experience.     I’ve coached thousands of job seekers who felt lost and overwhelmed. Here are the 10 steps we start with to find the right path: 1. Your #1 Priority Clarity should be the first thing you invest in. It makes career success SO much easier (at every stage). When you have clarity, you can invest 100% of your energy into that goal. So before you start applying to jobs or grad school? Find your path. 2. The Myth Of “Passion” People think passion is a lightning bolt that suddenly hits you. One day you wake up knowing what you're supposed to do. That's BS. Passion stems from action. It's the result of trying new things. If you want to find your path? You need to act. 3. Map Out Your Ideal Lifestyle Career happiness doesn't come from a job title. It stems from the ability to meet your lifestyle needs: – Target salary – Ideal living situation – Surrounded by people you love – Work that fills your cup Start by defining all of these things. 4. Label Your Energy Next, grab a piece of paper. Make two columns: 1. Energy Creators 2. Energy Drainers Now list out every single activity, task, and project you've worked on. Label each as a creator or drainer. Your career path should be filled with energy creators. 5. Clarify Your Strengths Success is easier when your path plays to natural strengths. I recommend the High 5 Test. It's a 15 minute quiz that will define your top strengths. It'll tell you what each means and how to harness it. Talent: A natural way of thinking, feeling, behaving × Investment: Time spent practicing, developing your skills, or building a knowledge base = Strength: The ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance 6. Find People Doing "Cool" Stuff Now you've created clarity around your strengths, energy, and ideal lifestyle. Next, I want you to find people already living that life. Who has a job you admire? What jobs have seemed “cool” to you in the past? Make a list of 30+ contacts. 7. Reach Out & Learn Make a daily habit of reaching out to one person. Be honest about your situation and desire for clarity. Then make sure to build up their achievements and mention why you admire them. Here's the email template I used when I was on this journey: The Winning Template: Subject: Quick Question  Hi [Name], My name is [Your Name] and I came across your information on LinkedIn while I was looking for people who transitioned into [Industry/Field] from a non-traditional background. Your background is really impressive! I saw you do different fields and [Industry/Field] really piqued my interest. If you have a few minutes, I’d love to hear more about your journey and how you landed in your role today. I know that’s a big ask so no worries if it’s too much. I totally understand. Either way, hope you have a great rest of the week!

    𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸: 𝗔 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of #mentoring some brilliant women professionals, who are not just talented but deeply dedicated to their work. Yet, many of them have approached me feeling demotivated, not because of a lack of skills or opportunities, but because their contributions were being overshadowed or outright claimed by others. This isn’t just about #confidence; it’s about #fairness & the #courage to set #boundaries. One mentee, a high-performing manager, shared how her ideas were routinely presented as someone else’s in meetings. Another was disheartened after months of leading a project only to see the credit given to a peer. Their stories resonated deeply because 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲. According to Harvard Business Review, 82% of professionals experience credit-snatching, & for many, it directly impacts their career progression. Through the mentoring process, I've helped them develop strategies to reclaim ownership & ensure their contributions were recognized. Here are some strategies that worked: 1. 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 One mentee began sharing weekly progress emails with her manager & team, clearly outlining her contributions. This simple step not only increased transparency but also ensured her work was visible to key stakeholders. 2. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗨𝗽 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 During a team meeting, another mentee confidently reclaimed her idea when someone else tried to take credit. She said, “I’m glad this was brought up, it’s something I explored when I worked on XYZ. Here’s how I think we can take it forward.” It wasn’t confrontational, but it was firm. 3. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 I guided another of my mentee to cultivate allies; peers who could amplify her voice in meetings & advocate for her when she wasn’t in the room. This not only boosted her confidence but also created a stronger team dynamic. 4. 𝗢𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 Many women hesitate to showcase their achievements, fearing they’ll appear boastful. But 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲; 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. I urged a mentee to volunteer for presenting team results at a leadership forum. Her presentation was so impactful that she became the go-to person for similar opportunities. The transformation in my mentees has been inspiring. From feeling sidelined to becoming confident advocates for their work, they’ve proven that taking ownership is empowering. 𝗕𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲: There's a thin line between standing up for self & self promotion. However, remember that you deserve to be seen & acknowledged for your efforts.     I used to think that as long as I worked hard, career success would fall into place. I kept my head down. Worked late. Tried to be the one who always delivered. I thought that’s how careers were built. Then one day, a senior leader I barely knew pulled me aside after a tense meeting. He said: “Just so you know… I spoke up for you in the strategy session yesterday. Someone questioned if you were ready for this level of work. I told them you were the reason our retention went up by 40% .” I stood there in shock. Because I hadn’t even known my name was in the room. And that’s when I realized: Your career isn’t built only on what you do. It’s built on who speaks up for you when you’re not there. So here’s my coaching for you today: ✨ Whose name are you protecting right now? Because here’s what high-achievers get wrong many times: → They believe results alone will secure their future. → They think talent will speak for itself. → They forget silence can erase them from the rooms where decisions happen. But I’ve seen the most impactful leaders I’ve coached know understand that careers are collective. → They guard others’ reputations, not just their own. → They speak names into rooms where opportunities are born. → They build spaces where loyalty speaks louder than silence. If you want your career, and the careers of those around you, to thrive, remember this: 1. Spot silent heroes. Don’t assume people see quiet courage. Name it. Celebrate it. 2. Say the unsaid. “I think [name] has exactly the skills we need.” One sentence can change a career. 3. Build safe rooms. Make sure people feel seen and protected, even when they’re not there. This is how you live The C.H.O.I.C.E.® Framework IRL: • Courage → Speak up, even when it’s risky. • Humility → Remember you didn’t get here alone. • Openness → Listen for missing voices. • Integration → Turn private praise into public sponsorship. • Curiosity → Ask, “Who else deserves credit?” • Empathy → Shine a light on those who feel invisible. The reality is your career will be shaped by tables you never sit at… and the people willing to carry your name across them.     Not Everyone Who Waits Gets Seen: The Unspoken Reality of Relying on Merit Alone Someone reached out to me recently. They’ve been in their profession for over a decade. Committed. Consistent. Conscientious. They said softly, but with weight "I thought if I just did the work, someone would recognise it. I thought merit would be enough." They weren’t looking for shortcuts. They weren’t chasing praise. They simply believed the system would honour what it promised: That talent rises. That effort gets rewarded. That playing fair pays off. But here’s what many of us learn too late: Merit is real but recognition is rarely neutral. Here’s the lessons no one puts in the employee handbook: You’re not promoted for how hard you work. You’re promoted for how visible your work is to the right people. Office politics aren’t dirty they’re often just the informal routes to power. If you ignore them completely, you leave your career to luck. Doing good work is step one. But building influence? That’s what sustains opportunity. If you're in that place where you feel overlooked, under-acknowledged, maybe even undervalued this is for you. Here’s what I wish someone had told me earlier: 1. Master the invisible curriculum. Every workplace has two rulebooks: the official one, and the one people don’t talk about. Learn how things really get done. Learn who gets heard, and why. That’s not selling out it’s smart navigation. 2. Relationships move decisions. Build trust before you need it. Advocate for others so they learn to advocate for you. It’s not networking. It’s strategic generosity. 3. You need sponsors, not just mentors. Mentors give advice. Sponsors put their name on the line for you. One conversation can change your year. One sponsor can change your life. 4. Start documenting your impact relentlessly. Don’t wait for a performance review to prove your value. Build your evidence file. Track results. Capture praise. Advocate with facts, not feelings. 5. If the room doesn’t see your worth, ask: was it built to? You may not be the problem. But you are responsible for protecting your potential. Sometimes the boldest move is walking away from systems that feed on silence. I say this with care: Sometimes I waited too long to be seen. Trusted that doing the work would be enough. Believed that integrity alone would guarantee elevation. But I’ve learned: Integrity is the foundation. Visibility is the lever. Strategy is the bridge. This isn’t just about one person. It’s about every high performer quietly carrying disappointment. Every brilliant mind wondering if maybe they were naïve for believing good things come to those who wait. They don’t. Good things come to those who move intentionally. Speak purposefully. And understand the game without letting it shape their soul. Your value isn’t in who notices you. It’s in knowing you’re not here to be discovered. You’re here to be undeniable.

    If you've sent out 200+ applications in the past six months and all you've heard is silence, it's not bad luck ~ it’s a sign you need to change your approach! I’ve had clients come to me after blasting out hundreds of resumes with zero results, and my advice is always the same: stop relying on job boards alone and start diversifying your strategy!! Here’s what I’ve seen work and what I'm recommending: 1. Build real connections (this is the game-changer). Most jobs are filled through referrals or internal hires. If you’re not networking, you’re competing against hundreds (or thousands) of applicants. Instead: - Reach out to hiring managers directly. - Talk to employees at companies you admire. - Join industry Slack groups, Discords, and networking events. Many Slack communities have exclusive job postings and hiring managers actively looking for talent. 2. Make LinkedIn work for you. I’ve seen candidates land jobs just by being active. If you’re only applying but never posting, commenting, or optimizing your profile, you’re invisible. Show up and engage ~ hiring managers are watching! 3. Pitch yourself. One of my clients landed a role by cold-emailing a hiring manager with actionable ideas to improve their marketing. (Note that you must do this strategically or it will backfire and you might come off as a know-it-all!) Sometimes, the best jobs aren’t even listed until the right person makes a case for them. 4. Look beyond LinkedIn & job boards. So many great opportunities exist outside the usual platforms. Depending on your industry, check out: AngelList – startups Wellfound – tech We Work Remotely – fully remote jobs Behance / Dribbble / CreativeMornings – creative roles 5. Get expert guidance. If your job search feels like a black hole, you don’t have to figure it out alone. A career coach (like me!) can help you fine-tune your strategy, craft outreach messages, and unlock hidden job opportunities so you're not stuck in the endless cycle of online applications.     One of the talks I’ve given to a few teams internally at Microsoft is “PMing your career”. Mid-career is the perfect time to step back, see yourself as a ‘product,’ and start managing your career with intention and strategy. Here are 5 axioms I use as part of the frame: ➡️1. Treat your career as a Product with a strategic fit: Every high-performing professional has a unique value proposition. Regularly assess your Personal Product-Market Fit (PMF) to ensure that your strengths, skills, and how you’re positioning them align with the needs of your industry and your company. Strong careers, like great products, adapt to stay relevant and strategically fit. This helps you identify places you might need to grow too. ➡️2. Your resume is (kind-of) Product Review Document (PRD): Like a PRD highlights a product’s features, your resume should capture your top achievements and core skills. Keep it current and aligned with your goals, showcasing how your career product has evolved. ➡️3. Use feedback as your career “Customer Review”: Just as products thrive on customer feedback, your career benefits from input from mentors, peers, and leaders. Thoughtfully incorporate this feedback to stay aligned with your goals and make strategic improvements. ➡️4. Set a career Roadmap: Map out your career with a focus on strategy and clear goals. These checkpoints – skills to gain, connections to build, and roles to pursue – keep you moving toward your vision of success and position you for future opportunities. Ask others who have already taken the path what the checkpoints are. ➡️5. Embrace phases as part of your strategy: Like product lifecycles, careers have phases. In early roles, focus on mastering foundational skills; as you advance, lean into influence and decision-making; and eventually, hone discernment for opportunities.     Throughout my professional career as former NFL Director of Player Health and Performance, Professional and Division I Collegiate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Co-founder and CEO of a substantially sized physical therapy healthcare company that annually acquires literally hundreds of affiliate healthcare students from across the country, has brought about numerous conversations on many diverse topics. My experiences with these students, new graduates, and less experienced professionals in the specialized fields of physical therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports science, etc., who aspire to work with low to high level athletes, or with a specific population of their choice, has prompted the following recommendations: 1. Don’t accept your first career employment opportunity based upon the highest salary – As the cost of education and living isn’t inexpensive, your initial employment should offer a fair salary, but more importantly, provide opportunities such as mentorship, enhancing knowledge and skillset, as well as the prospect to work with athletes (or other preferred clientele) at various levels of competition. Future professional (and financial) advancement will be based upon knowledge, skillset, reputation, experience, and outcomes. 2. Find an exceptional mentor(s) - A mentor will assist to enhance both knowledge and skillset, provide sound advice, introduce additional and exceptional professional relationships, and assist in the achievement of your desired professional goals. 3. Have some humility – As a young professional you are teeing off at the 1st hole of your career. Respect those that have already played the course. 4. Perform the jobs, tasks, and work hours that your professional peers won't. As job prospects are not going to be just handed to you, your efforts will be remembered at the time of future career opportunities. 5. Keep learning and honing your skills throughout your professional career. Every profession has a top 10% of professionals as well as a bottom 10%. A commonality between these two 10% groups is that both groups likely don’t know more than they actually do know. Make the efforts to advance your knowledge to close that “don’t know-do know” gap. 6. Don’t ever be intimidated or uncomfortable to ask a question(s). When your contributions are correct both knowledge and confidence are reinforced. If contributions are flawed, appropriate knowledge is obtained. It’s a win-win. 7. Don’t ever let anyone convince you that you cannot achieve your professional dreams and goals. Those who try to dissuade you likely lacked the courage, confidence, and drive to follow theirs. Work hard, learn much, stay calm, and be patient. 8. Don’t focus upon the finish line of your career, enjoy the journey. The finish line may appear distant, but will arrive sooner than you anticipated. When all is said and done you’ll want to look back and appreciate a brilliant career while having few regrets.

    Career transitions are tough–but they’re more common than ever. Last week, I hosted a webinar about navigating career changes. Here are few of the tips I shared: 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. After a layoff, allow space for recovery and reflection. Then build structure into your days so that you’re balancing the job search with personal pursuits. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿. Identify what energizes you and what’s non-negotiable. Without focus, you risk landing a job you later wish you hadn’t taken. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆. Be open to new possibilities. Think about how your skills and experience can transfer to new roles or industries you hadn't considered before. 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲. Refresh your LinkedIn profile, resume, and highlights to align with your current goals. Being generic won’t get you noticed. 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵. Take stock of your experiences and interests and create a short summary of your experiences and interests so people know how you might fit into potential opportunities. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Learn about others’ roles and industries. Share your story. Don’t ask for a job–ask for insights or advice. 𝗕𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. Consider part-time work, freelancing, or short term projects to build momentum and add to your experience while you figure out your longer-term path. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Career transitions are an opportunity to reset with more intention and clarity about what truly matters right now.
