Let me give you a comprehensive roadmap: Step 1: Skills Gap Analysis Current State Assessment: • List all your current technical and soft skills • Review your recent performance appraisals for feedback • Ask trusted colleagues or managers about your strengths and improvement areas • Compare your skills with job descriptions you're targeting Market Research: • Study 15-20 job postings in your target role/industry • Identify the most frequently mentioned skills • Note the "nice to have" vs "must have" requirements( use platforms like naukri) Step 2: Prioritise Your Learning High-Impact Skills to Focus On: 1. Technical skills- that appear in 70%+ of your target job postings 2. Certifications - commonly mentioned in your industry 3. Soft skills- like leadership, communication, project management 4. You can't get promoted in FP&A by just working longer hours FP&A people spend too much time on routine tasks during their standard work week. But the most successful ones find ways to level up their analytical skills and impact. It's about building up the value you deliver. How? Here are 5 key areas to focus on: 1. Data visualization: Start using charts like waterfalls to better visualize and explain your analysis. Move beyond just reporting the numbers to provide clear data storytelling. 2. Driver-based analysis: Don't just report revenues and costs. Dig deeper to identify and track the key drivers behind them, like units, prices, industry factors, etc. 3. Statistical analysis: Pull basic statistics like averages, distributions, etc. to summarize and interpret your data using Excel analysis tools. Compare across segments and time periods. 4. Forecasting techniques: For major forecasting items, apply data science methods like regression and time series analysis. Review historical forecasting errors to identify improvement opportunities. 5. Optimization modeling: Work with data scientists to build optimization models using linear programming for areas like marketing spend allocation that management needs decision support on. The bottom line? Actively upskilling in these areas shows you're going beyond reporting. Set weekly goals, find online courses & resources, and get hands-on practice. Don’t wait until you kick off a job search (whether voluntarily or not) to think about your career. This is what they mean when they say “recession proofing” your career. Remember, you don't own your job. But you do own your career. You own your network, your personal brand, and your career choices. Here’s what to consider at least once per month when working on your career development: - Do I know where I would go next? Always have a clear idea of what role or field you’d want to pursue next, so that way all of your current efforts are targeted. - Have I been upskilling? What new skills or technologies are critical for me to learn? Do I know what skills and technologies are the most current and valued for my target roles? Could you start a side gig, a certification, or any other creative projects? Do you want to explore offering your talents on an hourly or project basis? Build up an Upwork profile, or check out other freelancing sites. - Have I worked on my brand? Keep your resume and LinkedIn profile updated regularly. Have I built out a portfolio or website? Should I dabble in writing some thought leadership pieces (articles, blogs)? - Have I been building my network? Try to meet at least one new person in your target field each month. - Have I been exploring internal opportunities? Make the most of your current company by seeing what you can get involved in that helps you move towards your ideal path. - Have I been taking care of myself holistically? The more you feel physically, emotionally, spiritually centered, the easier it will be to thrive and focus on your career. I had a conversation recently with a client who is smart, accomplished, and genuinely great at what she does. Everyone talks about networking, personal branding, or finding the right opportunity. But the real secret in this environment is upskilling. From coaching leaders across industries, I have seen that upskilling keeps you relevant and opens new options that increase your leverage. A few things I share with clients: - Don’t wait, anticipate. - Learn in real time and stretch yourself. - Own you career strategy: design a personal learning plan. - Share what you are learning: show how you are evolving. - Find a mentor who is strong in the skill you want to build. - Integrate what you learn into how you work. Attend webinars and online workshops 2. Read a book at your local library 3. Attend informational interviews 4. Network on social media 5. Catch up with newsletters in your inbox 6. Do a knowledge transfer with a friend whose job you like 7. Take free online courses (Google, Coursera, OpenLearn) 8. Join industry-related groups 9. Listen to podcasts 10. Watch YouTube 11. Use up all the free resources provided by your university (Alumni benefit, too) 12. Join online study groups/forums 13. Take advantage of free trials and don’t forget to cancel them 14. [#Careertips] UPSKILLING STRATEGIES In today ever changing world, we need to keep ourselves relevant in order to keep creating values for the organization, especially if we would like to keep growing in our career. For example: if we have aspiration to be People Manager, having understanding of technical skills is not enough, we need to start learning about managing people. Even if we want to move within specialist field, for example: if we would like to move from Data Scientist to Senior Data Scientist, having understanding of a more advanced technical knowledge will help with your career growth. The question is how then we do the upskilling for ourselves? Here are some ways that you could consider: 💼 JOB ROTATION / NEW PROJECTS Find out internal career opportunity that can give you exposure for a broader knowledge. It can be internal career mobility or participate in a cross functional projects in a new area that you want to learn for 📖 READING BOOKS Book is still a good resources to learn about new knowledge. What I would like to suggest is don't stop only at reading the book but come up with your own practical summary on how you could apply what you learn from the book. I am applying the tips from Dale Carnegie book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and it helps me a lot in relationship building. 💻 ONLINE LEARNING There are various online learning provider, such as LinkedIn Learning that provide various resources on many topics. Find the one that suits with your needs and aspiration. Again, to make the learning effective, you need to come up with your own practical ways to apply the knowledge. 🏢 FORMAL/INFORMAL EDUCATION You could also consider taking further education to advanced your learning. Of course, the decision of the degree, major, university, etc. needs to be based on what do you want to achieve. Another option is to take specific bootcamp. You need to do research to find the valid one and not getting into scam. Better if the bootcamp could also help you with job placement. 👨 FIND MENTOR Have a mentor could also help you in navigating your career and learn on how to manage a difficult situation based on your mentor experience. Apart of the different ways of learning, below mindset are equally important. 🧠 GROWTH MINDSET We need to have internal motivation to keep growing. Having growth mindset will serve us as internal reminder that we need to keep doing better tomorrow vs today. 🏔 RESILIENCE Try a new thing wont be easy. There would be moments when we feel like giving up. However, winner is usually for those who have resilience and not easy to give up. 🙅♂️ THE COURAGE TO SAY YES (AND NO) When your manager give you a new projects that can help with your development and you have doubt whether you can deliver, you need the courage to say YES. Yesterday we had a great session in the Talent Development Think Tank job search group on upskilling on a budget. It's critical to make sure you're skilling up and staying relevant in the marketplace so you're competitive with other jobseekers. 1️⃣ 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧. To determine the skills you need most, identify 5-7 of your ideal roles. See what the most common skills are for each role, and focus on those. Some of these may be completely new skills to you, and others may be just sharpening the axe on skills you already have. 2️⃣ 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝. When's the last time you've been to your local library? Beyond the standard checking out books for free, libraries have other resources that can help jobseekers. In many areas, your library card will get you access to LinkedIn Learning courses and Libby. LI Learning regularly adds new, relevant courses from industry experts. You can search by topic/skill to hone in on the courses you should be taking. Libby is an app that lets you download ebooks and audiobooks from your local library. So that giant book list you've been wanting to tackle is now doable for no cost. Bonus tip from a group member: Another great resource to get low cost ebooks and audio books is the Kindle Unlimited membership through Amazon which is $12/month, but has more and different offerings than the library or Libby. 3️⃣ 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭. Podcasts, e-conferences, webinars, articles, and more. There's no shortage of free content available. Focus on industry leaders or vendors, and see what content they have available. 4️⃣ 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. For many, the best way to learn, is by doing. Often times, non profits or trade organizations will let you volunteer and try your hand at something new, even if you have limited experience. All experience is relevant, regardless of whether it was paid or unpaid. Use volunteering as a way to step outside your comfort zone and try new things.
