The lack of clarity in organizational communication is one of the leading causes of employee frustration and turnover. In particular, unclear instructions – like the infamous “pls fix” became memes. And yet, the equally unhelpful “Do better, bosses” seems to be the most typical response. But how many have been taught the foundations of clear managerial communication? Let’s do better, shall we – and by that, I mean – let’s clarify how managers can provide clear instructions. But without micromanaging and killing creativity. In this article, I develop a clarity + creativity communication formula by modifying the 5Ws (What, Why, Who, Where, When) and 1H (How) framework used in project management. This can turn "pls fix" into: What (is the task): Streamline the presentation. Why: We want the client to know we do not waste time. How: Focus on the core message – we can deliver results with an efficient and proven process. Provide findings from the latest quarterly report and two examples.  Who: You are responsible. When: It needs to be ready by Tuesday. And then, to support innovative thinking, we can add the C (Creativity) statement like "If you come up with any suggestions for making this even more memorable/impressive/convincing, let me know." The same approach works equally well for the shop or store floor or the boardroom. Read on for more research, examples, and specific cases! None of us are born master communicators. But a structured framework supporting both clarity and autonomy can help. #communication #management #creativity #innovation #clarity #performance #motivation

I learned this one the hard way: leadership starts with clear communication. I remember a project where the problem started with me. I wasn’t clear enough upfront, and it led to confusion, misaligned expectations, and frustration. It didn’t stop there—it spiraled into extra emails, more meetings, and way too much time trying to sort it all out. Worst of all, it damaged relationships within the team. That experience was a wake-up call. I realized my communication needed structure, so I started using the “Why, What, How” framework to turn things around: 1️⃣ Why: Explain the purpose behind the project and why it matters. 2️⃣ What: Be clear about expectations and deliverables. 3️⃣ How: Give actionable steps and clarify roles. The shift was immediate. With clear communication, the team felt aligned, work flowed smoothly, and we rebuilt trust. Leadership communication isn’t just about saying the right things—it’s about giving your team the clarity they need to move forward confidently. Speaking on a stage isn’t the only kind of communication that matters. The real test of leadership? How you communicate when there’s no spotlight. In the hallway. In the one-on-one. In the high-stakes meeting that never makes it to LinkedIn. Your ability to speak clearly, confidently, and compellingly directly impacts trust, alignment, and performance. At Career Thrivers, we teach leaders a simple yet powerful framework for oral communication that creates connection and clarity across every conversation, not just keynotes. Here’s the R.I.S.E.™️ Communication Framework we use: 🔹 R – Relevance: Start with what matters to your listener. What challenge are they navigating right now? 🔹 I – Intent: Be clear about why you’re speaking—what outcome do you want? 🔹 S – Story: Make it memorable. Use narrative and real-life context, not just data. 🔹 E – Engagement: Communication is a two-way street. Invite reflection and response. And if you’re navigating a transition right now, personally or professionally, this isn’t the time to shrink. Uncertainty isn’t a reason to go silent. It’s a reason to get clearer in how you share, so others can help you make the next move. Don’t hide, R.I.S.E. Because your voice doesn’t just reflect where you’ve been, it’s a tool to shape where you’re going. 📌 What’s one area where you want to improve your communication this quarter? #leadershipdevelopment

Transformational Leadership: Engaging Through Communication 🌟 One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned as a leader is that I am, in many ways, powerless. Powerless when relying solely on my expertise or knowledge. No matter how much I learn or how smart I become, the real value lies in what my team can achieve. Leadership demands effective communication. But how can we make communication truly engaging? ✅ Understand Your Team’s Perspective. Acknowledge that every team member brings unique motivations, concerns, and contributions. Use empathy to adapt your communication style to meet them where they are in their journey. ✅ Be Transparent and Consistent. Share the "why" behind decisions. When people understand the reasoning, they are more likely to buy in. Align your words with your actions to build trust. ✅ Create Two-Way Communication Channels. Encourage open dialogue where feedback flows both ways. Practice active listening to make your team feel heard and valued. ✅ Leverage Stories to Inspire and Connect. Share examples of team successes or lessons learned from challenges. Stories create emotional resonance and help make abstract ideas relatable. ✅ Celebrate Small Wins and Learn from Setbacks. Recognize achievements, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement boosts morale. Treat setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow, fostering a culture of resilience. ✅ Make Communication Visual and Accessible. Simplify complex ideas using diagrams, infographics, or tools like Kanban boards. Collaborative workshops and co-design sessions ensure everyone feels involved and invested. Leadership isn’t about knowing it all, it’s about empowering others to achieve greatness. Communication is the bridge that connects ideas to impact. Let’s learn from one another. 💡 What are your favorite strategies for fostering engaging communication? Leaders are often lauded for their vision, charisma, and decisiveness. But the truth is, the most impactful leaders are also the most intentional listeners. Strategic listening goes beyond simply "hearing" words. It's a deep dive into understanding the emotions, perspectives, and unspoken needs behind them. Here's how you can cultivate this transformative leadership skill: 1. Embrace Silence: Sometimes, the most profound insights emerge from moments of quiet. Allow your team the space to share openly and reflectively. 2. Active Body Language: Lean in, maintain eye contact, and show genuine interest through your nonverbal cues. Actions speak louder than words. 3. Ask Clarifying Questions: Don't assume understanding; seek clarity. Reframe and paraphrase to ensure you're truly capturing the essence of their message. 4. Practice Empathy: Listen not just with your ears, but with your heart. Acknowledge emotions and address underlying concerns with compassion. 5. Listen to Respond, Not React: Resist the urge to formulate your response while others are still speaking. Fully absorb their message before crafting your reply. By mastering strategic listening, you'll gain a deeper understanding of your team's strengths, challenges, and motivations. This not only fosters trust and psychological safety, but also empowers you to: 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Informed by diverse perspectives, not just your own. 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: By encouraging new ideas and fostering a safe space for creative problem-solving. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: When people feel heard and understood, loyalty and commitment soar. Strategic listening isn't a passive endeavour; it's a dynamic leadership tool that unlocks influence, fosters trust, and propels your team towards success. Are you ready to step into your role as a leader who listens and leads with empathy? #leadershipdevelopment #strategiclistening #communication #leadershipacumen #emotionalintelligence

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗴𝗼 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗴𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. Over the years, in leadership conversations across organizations, I’ve noticed something interesting. When results are strong, teams celebrate strategy. When results falter, teams blame execution. But rarely does anyone pause to ask a deeper question: 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨? Not just talking. Not just presenting slides. But communicating in a way that is 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹. I once worked with a leadership team that was facing growing internal friction. Targets were being missed, teams felt unheard, and leaders felt their instructions were not being followed. On the surface, it looked like a performance problem. But when we dug deeper, we discovered something else. Leaders believed they were being clear. Teams believed they were being misunderstood. Some leaders spoke 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁, not to align. Some teams listened 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱, not to understand. The result? Meetings were happening. Conversations were not. And that’s the subtle leadership trap. In times of growth, poor communication gets masked by momentum. In times of pressure, it gets exposed brutally. Which is why 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The ability to: • Say difficult things with respect • Align people around clarity, not hierarchy • Listen beyond words • Replace assumptions with dialogue Because strategy may set direction. Talent may build capability. But 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀. In my experience, organizations don’t fail because people aren’t capable. They fail because 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. And the leaders who recognize this early build something rare: Not just high-performing teams. But 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. #LeadershipDevelopment #Communication #LeadershipMatters #WorkplaceCulture #PeopleLeadership #LeadershipInsights

Great leadership communication isn't about talking more. It's about communicating across 8 critical dimensions. Most leaders master 2-3 of these naturally. The rest? They miss them entirely. And that's why their communication falls flat. Here are the 8 C's every leader needs to master to build trust, drive execution, and scale impact: 🗣️ Clear Clarity ensures your message is easily understood. Avoid jargon and ambiguity. If you're explaining the same thing 3 times, the problem isn't them. It's your clarity. ACTION: Before communicating, ask yourself: "What's the ONE thing they need to know?" 🗣️ Concise Deliver your message in as few words as possible without losing meaning. Say what matters. Cut everything else. ACTION: If you can't explain it in 3 sentences, you're not clear enough yet. 🗣️ Concrete Use specific details and examples. "You're not meeting expectations" is vague. "In the last 3 reports, deadlines were missed by 2+ days" is concrete. ACTION: Replace adjectives with observable behaviors. Show, don't tell. 🗣️ Correct Make sure there's accuracy in content and facts. One factual error undermines your entire message. ACTION: Verify numbers, names, and facts before hitting send. 🗣️ Considerate Adapt to your audience's perspective and needs. How your message lands matters more than how you intended it. ACTION: Ask yourself: "What does our audience care about right now?" 🗣️ Collaborative Invite open conversation and feedback. "What's getting in the way?" opens dialogue. "Do better" closes it. ACTION: End with an open question. Your team are the ones on the ground each day, not you. 🗣️ Consistent Communicate regularly and reliably. One great message doesn't stick. Repetition with consistency does. If you're tired of saying it, they're just starting to hear it. ACTION: Key messages need repeating. Say it 7 times before assuming they've heard it once. 🗣️ Connected Ensure there's a clear understanding through feedback. Don't assume it. "Does that make sense?" isn't enough. Ask "What's your next step?" That tells you if they got it. ACTION: Close important communications with: "What questions do you have?" and "What's your takeaway?" When you understand all 8 C's and apply them consistently, your communication becomes your leadership advantage. Your team moves faster. Decisions stick. Execution improves. Because communication isn't a soft skill. It's the system that determines whether your team executes or stalls. If you want more leadership frameworks like this delivered daily. Ever found yourself facing a team that might not naturally be considered "creative," but you know deep down there's untapped potential waiting to be ignited? That's where the real magic happens – when you transform a group of individuals into a powerhouse of innovation! Here are a few strategies to nurture creativity in even the most unexpected places: 1️⃣ Diverse Perspectives: Embrace the beauty of diversity within your team. Different backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets can create a melting pot of ideas that spark innovation. 2️⃣ Encourage Curiosity: Cultivate a culture of questioning and curiosity. Challenge your team to explore the "what ifs" and "whys" to uncover new solutions. 3️⃣ Collaborative Storming: Gather your team for brainstorming sessions. Fostering an environment where no idea is too outrageous encourages free thinking and inspires unique concepts. 4️⃣ Cross-Pollination: Encourage your team to draw inspiration from unrelated fields. Sometimes, the most innovative solutions come from connecting seemingly unrelated dots. 5️⃣ Empower Ownership: Give individuals ownership of projects and allow them to take creative risks. When people feel their ideas matter, they're more likely to contribute their creative juices. 6️⃣ Learning from "Fails": Embrace failure as a stepping stone to success. Encourage your team to share their failures and lessons learned – these experiences often lead to innovative breakthroughs. 7️⃣ Structured Creativity: Implement frameworks like Design Thinking or Ideation Workshops. These structured approaches can guide your team to think creatively within a defined framework. 8️⃣ Celebrating Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate every small burst of creativity. This positive reinforcement encourages more innovative thinking. 9️⃣ Mentorship and Learning: Pair up team members with differing strengths. Learning from each other's expertise can lead to cross-pollination of ideas. 🔟 Lead by Example: Show your own passion for creativity. When your team sees your enthusiasm for innovation, it's contagious! Remember, creativity is not exclusive to certain roles or industries – it's a mindset that can be nurtured and cultivated. So, let's harness the potential within our teams, empower individuals to think outside the box, and watch as innovation unfolds before our eyes! #InnovationAtWork #whatinspiresme #culture #teamwork #CreativeThinking #TeamCreativity #LeadershipMindset #bestweekever

A lesson that I’m grateful to have learned early on in life: you can communicate with anyone if you’re willing to put in the effort. My parents were educational pioneers who taught ASL and worked to improve the education system for children with disabilities. Growing up in that environment gave me a unique perspective on communication — what it really means, and how powerful it can be. If you put half a dozen people from different countries in a room who don’t speak the same language, you’d likely have a group of people just standing around, looking at each other. But, in my experience, six deaf individuals from different nationalities who didn’t share a common sign language would find a way to communicate with each other within 60 seconds. Even without a shared spoken language, they would find ways to improvise and gesture in a manner that conveys meaning and intent. Their patience, their powers of observation, and their commitment to engaging others were exceptional. From that environment, I took away a few core lessons: 1) Effort makes connection possible. If you’re observant and willing to engage, you can learn and understand a lot, whether through words, or through body language, which often says so much more. 2) Creativity is key. Bridging communication gaps often means adjusting your framing, your tone, or your story. Sometimes, it’s as simple as finding a new gesture or analogy that resonates. 3) Perfection isn’t required. People often want to say exactly the right thing in exactly the right way — but then they end up saying nothing at all. Communication is an iterative process. Just put it out there and adapt as you go. These lessons have stayed with me and continue to shape how I communicate in work and life.

𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 🎯 Is your team’s creativity suffocating under the weight of criticism? It’s challenging to thrive in an environment where each misstep is scrutinized and every creative effort is dampened by the threat of harsh feedback. Such a climate can dampen the spirit of innovation, leading your team to opt for safety over exploration. 👀 Here’s how you can shift this dynamic: 📌 Set Clear Communication Rules: Implement guidelines that promote respectful and constructive feedback. Focus on ideas and processes, not people. Show your team how it’s done by leading by example. 📌 Cultivate a 'Safe to Fail' Atmosphere: Promote a culture that sees risk-taking as essential for growth. Frame projects as learning experiences, celebrating the process rather than just the outcome. 📌 Hold Regular One-on-One Meetings: Make time to connect with each team member personally. Discuss their work and how they feel about the team environment. Adopting these measures can transform your team’s dynamic, reducing the fear of innovation and empowering members to think and act inventively. What initiatives have you introduced to foster a more open and innovative team culture? I’d love to hear your experiences.⬇️ #creativity #innovation #culture #leadership #empowerment #communication
