Summary

Smart product technologies use artificial intelligence and advanced sensors to give everyday objects the ability to learn, adapt, and respond to users in real time. By embedding intelligence directly within products, businesses can create new experiences—like self-monitoring equipment, personalized shopping, and adaptive manufacturing—that go far beyond simply digitizing devices.

  • Integrate AI features: Embed intelligent software or chips in your products to enable real-time personalization, predictive monitoring, and automated decision-making.
  • Improve discoverability: Make sure your product images, descriptions, and branding are clear and accessible to voice and AI-powered search tools, so customers can find you easily online.
  • Embrace smart manufacturing: Adopt advanced production methods like edge computing or neuromorphic chips to build connected products that monitor, report, and adapt to their environment—even at the smallest scale.

It wasn’t too long ago that every product was becoming a “digital” product. Thermostats gained screens. Cars became rolling computers. Even toothbrushes got apps. Digital transformation meant putting a screen on it, building an app for it, or moving it to the cloud. Today, we’re entering a new era. Every product is now becoming an AI product. We’ve moved beyond digitization. We’re now in the era of intelligent products, where “smart” is the baseline, and it’s all about cognition. The golden question for organizations is no longer: “How can we digitize this?” It’s now: “What can this product learn and how fast can it adapt to my users’ needs?” This shift will fundamentally reshape entire industries. Travel products will become self-correcting - rerouting around disruptions, rebooking proactively, and tailoring each trip to the traveler in real time. Financial tools will evolve into autonomous advisors - analyzing risk, optimizing decisions, and proactively safeguarding against fraud before it happens. Communications & Media Platforms will dynamically create and deliver personalized content, automate moderation, and respond contextually - changing how we consume and engage with information. Industrial & Manufacturing Products will self-monitor and self-heal. Operations will become predictive, autonomous, and increasingly efficient, powered by AI-driven digital twins and edge intelligence. Retail and supply chain systems will make real-time decisions about inventory, pricing, and fulfillment - improving margins while delivering hyper-personalized experiences. AI-native health products will detect disease earlier, assist diagnosis, and personalize care pathways - radically improving outcomes and reducing the burden on clinicians. At IBM, we’re helping clients get ahead of this shift by: 1. Applying product engineering principles to build AI-native products - intuitive, adaptive experiences that evolve with every user interaction. 2. Using AI to engineer better digital products - accelerating development, enhancing decision-making, and radically improving time-to-value. We’re not just embedding AI into features. We’re weaving it into the DNA of the product lifecycle itself. If you’re exploring how to evolve your product into an AI-powered one or want to rethink how you build digital experiences with AI, I’d love to connect. Let’s build what’s next. #AI #DigitalProductEngineering #FutureOfProducts #ArtificialIntelligence #IBM

The Missing Piece of Smart Things Manufacturing 🧠⚡ Remember our vision of 3D printing smart shipping boxes and supply chain sensors at any corner store earlier this week? One underlying technology that can make it possible are new chips that think like the human brain. Neuromorphic edge chips are now so small and efficient they can be embedded anywhere. We're talking tiny 1-milliwatt processors that work like our brains do—100x faster processing and 500x lower energy consumption. 🚀 Companies like BrainChip and SynSense are developing these today. While not ready for any old box yet, they're rapidly approaching the point where intelligence becomes as standard as plastic in manufacturing. What becomes possible when 1-milliwatt intelligence gets embedded anywhere? 💡 📦 Smart packaging on pallets that knows when something's wrong 🔐 Product-level monitoring with chips smart enough to detect issues 📊 Equipment sensors that understand their environment and alert you instantly ⚡ Connected intelligence in boxes, products, even intelligent documents Here's the breakthrough: 🎯 These chips literally work like our brains do—they only activate when something happens. Smart enough to understand when something's wrong, connected enough to let you know instantly. 🧠 Brain-inspired processing that mimics human neurons 🔋 1-milliwatt power - operates for months on minimal energy 💾 Microscopic size - getting small enough for embedding anywhere 💰 Incredible economics - intelligence approaching the cost of a sticker Imagine designing things by specifying not just shape and material, but exactly where to place micro-intelligence during printing. Every object emerges already smart, already connected. What becomes possible when intelligence is built into the manufacturing process? 🤔 The answer is reshaping entire industries—and we're just getting started. 🌍 #Innovation #3DPrinting #SmartObjects #SupplyChain #Logistics #Manufacturing #EdgeComputing #Neuromorphic
