If you are preparing for a Cloud Network Engineer role today, here's a roadmap you can follow. Cloud networking isn't a completely new discipline. It's traditional networking skills combined with cloud platforms, automation, and infrastructure delivered as software. Step-by-Step Roadmap to Cloud Network Engineering : 1. Build Strong Networking Fundamentals → Build a strong foundation in routing, switching, TCP/IP, IP addressing, Ethernet technologies, and other essential network services. (This is the foundation everything else builds upon.) 2. Pick One Cloud Platform - Practitioner Level → AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI (Don't try to learn every cloud at once.) 3. Learn Cloud Networking Services → Virtual networks, routing, load balancing, network security, and connectivity services (Understand how cloud providers implement networking concepts.) 4. Understand Cloud Security → Identity, segmentation, firewalls, and security best practices (Networking and security are closely connected in cloud environments.) 5. Learn Automation → Python, APIs, and Infrastructure as Code tools (Cloud engineers automate what traditional engineers often configure manually) 6. Explore Hybrid & Multi-Cloud Networking → Connect on-premises environments with cloud networks, migration strategies (Most enterprises aren't 100% cloud) 7. Build Projects around Cloud Networking Services → Design North-South/ East-west Traffic patterns, automate deployments, troubleshoot networking challenges. (Projects turn knowledge into experience.) 8. Learn Monitoring & Optimization → Visibility, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and cost awareness (Cloud networking isn't just about deployment ~ it's also about operations) 9. Stay Current → Follow industry trends, join communities such as (https://lnkd.in/giW98DJ7), CNCF events, and learn through certifications (CCNA, CCNP, Cloud Practitioner Certs) 10. Apply Your Skills → Take on projects - build that portfolio around networking, share knowledge, and keep building experience (This is where career growth happens.) As AI adoption grows, networking fundamentals become even more valuable. They provide the foundation needed to explore advanced domains like AI infrastructure, data center networking, InfiniBand fabrics, and next-generation Ethernet technologies. If you're a Network Engineer working toward the cloud, which step are you currently on? .......... Follow Chinmay Upasani for more Networking, Cloud, and Security insights.

In one DevOps role, I debugged DNS issues during on-call. In one DevOps role, I designed VPCs, subnets, and set up the whole infrastructure. In one DevOps role, I was diagnosing container networking. Across every role, networking has been constant. So don’t let the basics hold you back. Here are the core topics this doc covers: - Basic Networking Concepts (IP, DNS, Protocols) - Network Infrastructure and Topologies - Cloud Networking (VPCs, Subnets, Route Tables) - Network Automation (IaC for networking) - Service Discovery and Distributed Systems - Container Networking (Docker/Kubernetes) - Monitoring, Logging, and Tracing - Network Security and Firewalls - Performance and Optimization - Software-Defined Networking (SDN) This is the practical networking you’ll actually use. Honestly, we’re not network engineers. But we need networking for cloud and app connectivity. So if you’re worried about cloud networking.. Start here.

💡 Honest Advice for Network Engineers 💡 I have been working in the IT networking industry for the last 10+ years. I have witnessed both the pre-Corona and post-Corona periods, and the IT industry is changing very rapidly, introducing new technologies every minute. I remember working on the CLI to configure switches, routers, firewalls, and almost every networking device. Then Cisco made significant changes to its certifications and added SDN technologies, APIs, scripting, network automation tools, and configuration management software. The way of onboarding, configuration, troubleshooting, OS upgrades, and configuration backups has changed now. It is almost impossible for network engineers to be equipped with every technology, but we can be lifelong learners and change our approach towards it. 📈 If your fundamental knowledge is strong, you can learn any technology and be comfortable with upcoming ones as well. here are advice to network engineers for a future-proof career : 🔸 Don’t be a CLI-only engineer — learn automation (Python, Ansible, APIs). 🔸 Cloud is not optional — AWS, Azure, GCP networking is the new normal. 🔸 Security is part of networking — SASE, Zero Trust, SD-WAN are the future. 🔸 Think beyond vendors — focus on concepts, not just “Cisco” or “Juniper.” 🔸 Labs > Certificates — practice in GNS3, EVE-NG, or cloud sandboxes. 🔸 Soft skills matter — the best engineers explain complex ideas simply. 🔸 Keep learning — 2 years without upgrading your skills = outdated. 🔸 Build your brand — share knowledge on LinkedIn, YouTube, or blogs. . . #IT #Career_coach #networking #Cybersecurity #management

"Networking is dead"  Meanwhile... skilled Network Engineers are quietly becoming some of the highest-paid professionals in IT. Most people at 10 PM: No alerts, stress & Good night Network Engineers at 10 PM: ⚠️Why is BGP flapping? ⚠️Who touched the firewall policy? ⚠️Why is latency suddenly spiking? ⚠️Is the VLAN trunk even alive? ⚠️Why are 3 links down at midnight? Because when the network goes down... business stops, Revenue stops, Operations stop, Everything stops. And the pressure?  It lands on ONE team The Network Team But here’s what most people still don’t understand: Modern Networking is no longer just cables and CLI commands Today’s top engineers are learning: -Network Automation -Python & Ansible -SD-WAN -Cloud Networking -Cybersecurity -Real-time Monitoring -AI-powered Infrastructure That’s why companies are paying premium salaries for engineers who can actually troubleshoot, automate, and secure enterprise networks. The industry rewards engineers who can: ✔️ Solve problems under pressure ✔️ Work on real labs ✔️ Handle real enterprise scenarios ✔️ Think logically during outages Because in production Google can’t save you fast enough. "If everything works, nobody notices the Network Engineer. If one thing fails, everybody does." That’s the reality of this career. And honestly? That’s what makes it exciting. If you want to become industry-ready instead of just certificate-ready, now is the best time to level up.
