Is Your Voice Holding You Back from Being a Great Communicator? 🎙️ A powerful voice is key to confident, effective communication. If you feel your voice isn’t doing you justice, here are three practical tips to help you make a stronger impression: 1️⃣ Vary Your Volume: Speaking in a steady volume can come across as flat or hesitant. Instead, add emphasis by adjusting your volume. Raise your voice slightly to underscore important points and lower it for subtlety. This variation in volume helps you come across as both confident and engaging. 2️⃣ Master the Power of Pauses: Pauses are as important as words. A well-timed pause—before or after a major point—gives your audience time to process and creates anticipation. It’s an easy yet powerful way to add impact and make your message memorable. 3️⃣ Warm Up Your Voice: Just like any other muscle, your vocal cords need warming up to perform at their best. A few minutes of humming, gentle vocal exercises, or even tongue twisters can help you sound clearer and more controlled. When your voice is warmed up, it naturally projects better and leaves a stronger impression. Remember: a compelling voice isn’t just about what you say, but how you say it. I’ve watched more than 599 TEDx Talks till date. But, only 59 kept me hooked till the end! So, I did what I do the best - analysed them. And here’s a Public Speaking secret I found: VOCAL VARIETY. Every video that had me wanting more featured vocal variety almost every 30 seconds, if not more. Here are 5 Tips for you to do the same: 1. Instead of speaking in a monotone, vary your pitch. ⤷ Example: “I’m really excited about this project” with a high pitch on “excited.” 2. Instead of rushing through your speech, slow down for emphasis. ⤷ Example: "Pause dramatically before a crucial point." 3. Instead of maintaining the same volume, adjust your loudness. ⤷ Example: "Lower your voice for a secretive tone, then increase it for excitement." 4. Instead of using a single tone, change your inflection. ⤷ Example: "Raise your tone at the end of a question or for emphasis." 5. Instead of sticking to one emotional tone, express different emotions. ⤷ Example: "Show enthusiasm when happy, a softer tone when serious." At the end of it all, it is all about keeping the personal touch alive! P.S. What’s your biggest struggle with using vocal variety in your speeches?

One of the dimensions of #executivepresence is the ability to communicate thoughts expressively and with empathy. This is why Vocal Variety is so important. There are five dimensions to the human voice. I call them: The 5Ps of Vocal Variety. They are: 🅿️itch 🅿️ace 🅿️ause 🅿️rojection 🅿️ronunciation PITCH Vary your pitch so you don't sound monotone and put people to sleep. PACE Vary your pace to build suspense. PAUSE Insert pauses so people can process what you've said. PROJECTION Remote work and virtual calls have made us too reliant on microphones. Many people are having a hard time amping up the volume of their voice when they go back to presenting in person. Remember, when you are in person to project your voice to the back of the room. PRONUNCIATION If you are ever asked to repeat what you've just said, it's likely because you've either spoken too quickly, or you were mumbling. The remedy isn't to talk louder, it's to enunciate more clearly. People crave the clarity they get from the sound of your voice. #presence

🎙️ 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 = 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 But most speakers only train their script… not their sound. In 20+ years of coaching professionals and performers, I’ve noticed something: Those who command the room aren't always the loudest. They're the ones who know how to use their voice intentionally. Let’s break it down 👇 🧘♂️ 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤: 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨 ✅ 𝐁𝐨𝐱 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝟒-𝟒-𝟒-𝟒) A powerful tool to calm your nervous system before speaking. → Inhale for 4 seconds → Hold for 4 seconds → Exhale for 4 seconds → Hold again for 4 seconds 𝐓𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝟑 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. It slows down racing thoughts and centers your energy. ✅ 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 → Stand tall, feet grounded, shoulders relaxed. Why? A more open chest = better breath flow = fuller voice. ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 → Pause for 2–3 seconds before starting. → It signals confidence. → It makes people lean in instead of tune out. 🔊 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤: 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟒 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 1️⃣ 𝐑𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐦 – Don’t rush. Speak in beats like music. 2️⃣ 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 – Add highs and lows. Monotone kills attention. 3️⃣ 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 – Silence speaks volumes. 4️⃣ 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – Enunciate clearly. Mumbling blurs your message. 🎯 Try this test: Say “I believe in you” once without any vocal variety. Now say it again — slower, with a gentle rise and fall in pitch, a small pause before “you.”  𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞? 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. 📅 Ready to Train This Live? Did you know your voice could be sabotaging your success❓ Here's how to fix it. Your voice is your most powerful tool as a speaker. Yet so many of us neglect it. We focus on content and body language but forget about the very instrument that delivers our message. Let's change that. Let's talk about vocal techniques. First up: breathing. It's the foundation of good vocal technique. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing gives your voice power and stability. Try this: Put your hand on your belly. Breathe in deeply. Your hand should move outward. That's diaphragmatic breathing. Next: pitch. A monotone voice is the fastest way to lose your audience. Vary your pitch to add interest and emphasis. Practice scales. Yes, like a singer. It increases your vocal range and control. Volume is another key element. But louder isn't always better. Strategic volume changes can captivate your audience. Try the "whisper technique". Occasionally lower your volume. Watch how your audience leans in, hanging on your every word. Pace matters too. Too fast, and you'll lose them. Too slow, and you'll bore them. Vary your pace for impact. Use pauses. They're the punctuation marks of verbal communication. They give weight to your words and time for absorption. And don't forget articulation. Clear pronunciation ensures your message is understood. Try tongue twisters. They're not just for fun. They improve your articulation and diction. Remember, your voice is unique. Don't try to sound like someone else. Enhance your natural voice. Hydrate well. Avoid dairy before speaking. And warm up your voice before big presentations. Master these techniques and watch as your words take on new power, your message resonates more deeply, and your impact grows. Your voice is your instrument. Isn't it time you learned to play it well? — I’m John, a speaker coach I help founders use speaking as a tool to win business - selling from the stage Helping them with storytelling, speaking impactfully and filling the room at their events Plus the 10x10x10 video package - videos for social, email and your website Find out about my programs on my website

Your voice is an instrument. But most of us never learn to play it. For many years, I delivered presentations with a pretty flat tone and pretty similar. I was wondering why people checked their phones, why my message didn't land. Wondering what I was doing wrong. Then I attended a speaker training where I learned: Vocal variety isn't a talent you're born with. It's a skill you can train. So could I - I started doing something that felt ridiculous at first. Reading children's stories out loud with exaggerated emotion. Way too much drama. Way too much energy. Completely over the top. But something happened with my voice. It unlocked a range I didn't know I had. I discovered I could shift PITCH to emphasise key points. I could use PACE to build energy or create calm. I could DROP to a whisper for impact. I could PAUSE to let ideas land. Now I use these tools intentionally and on a daily basis. A whisper draws people in. A pause gives weight to words. Speed creates momentum. Contrast keeps attention. Your message matters and needs to be heard! But if your delivery is monotone, nobody stays long enough to hear it. Start small today. Record yourself speaking. Then practise one sentence with exaggerated variation. Feel the difference first. Then you and your audience will hear it too. Last week, I worked with speaking and communications coach Josh McCartney to refine my craft. Even with an established speaking career, I believe mastery comes from continuously perfecting the small details. We analysed video from a previous talk, identifying opportunities to rephrase for better audience connection, adjust pacing, emphasise key moments, and eliminate unnecessary content. Here's my three-step review process that might help you too: 1) Transcribe and read I highlight sections to cut and identify filler words that dilute my message. When I notice myself rambling, it signals I need to script and rehearse that section more thoroughly. 2) Watch without sound This reveals what my body language is really communicating. Am I pacing too much? What story are my facial expressions telling? Strategic stillness often conveys confidence, while intentional movement at key moments captures attention. 3) Listen without visuals I focus on pronunciation, diction, volume, speed, and pitch. The best speeches take audiences on a journey through vocal variety—think Bohemian Rhapsody. That dynamic range keeps people engaged from start to finish. Whether you're presenting to five people or five hundred, these techniques can elevate your impact. What's your best tip for improving as a speaker? I'd love to learn from your experience in the comments. #keynotespeaking #speaker #communication #professionaldevelopment

𝑫𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆: 𝑲𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑨𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 One of the most common mistakes in storytelling, especially in public speaking, is delivering your message in a monotone voice. This is a surefire way to lose your audience’s interest, no matter how compelling your content might be. 🎤 When I first started speaking publicly, I was so focused on getting my message across that I overlooked one critical element: vocal variation. I used to think that as long as my content was strong, people would listen. But over time, I noticed that despite my best efforts, I wasn’t getting the response I expected. Audiences seemed disengaged, and I wasn’t making the impact I wanted 😔 It wasn’t until I received some candid feedback that I realized the problem. My voice was flat, and it was putting my audience to sleep. That’s when I began to understand the power of vocal variation. Changing the pitch, pace, and tone of your voice can bring your story to life, keeping your audience engaged from start to finish.🚀 Once I started incorporating vocal variation into my storytelling, everything changed. My presentations became more dynamic, and I noticed that people were not just listening, but they were also responding more actively. The same content that once fell flat now resonated deeply with my audience. I realized that vocal variety is not just about avoiding monotony; it's about using your voice as a tool to emphasize key points, convey emotions, and guide your audience through the journey of your story. So, what are some vocal tricks you can use? Here are a few tips that have worked for me: 1. 𝑽𝙖𝒓𝙮 𝙔𝒐𝙪𝒓 𝑷𝙞𝒕𝙘𝒉: Use higher pitches to express excitement or urgency and lower pitches to convey seriousness or authority. 🎵 2. 𝘼𝒅𝙟𝒖𝙨𝒕 𝒀𝙤𝒖𝙧 𝙋𝒂𝙘𝒆: Slow down to emphasize important points, and speed up to convey energy or excitement.🏃♂️ 3. 𝘾𝒉𝙖𝒏𝙜𝒆 𝒀𝙤𝒖𝙧 𝙑𝒐𝙡𝒖𝙢𝒆: Raise your voice to capture attention or lower it to draw your audience in and create a sense of intimacy.🔊 These small changes can make a huge difference in how your message is received. Have you ever struggled with monotone delivery? What vocal techniques do you use to keep your audience engaged? Here are few key strategies to enhance your impact and connect with your audience: 𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝘼𝙪𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙊𝙪𝙩: Before you speak, understand who you're talking to. What are their interests, challenges, and existing knowledge? Tailor your message, examples, and even your vocabulary to resonate deeply with them. This is crucial for making your message stick! 𝘽𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧 & 𝙒𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙚: In today's fast-paced world, attention spans are precious. Get straight to the point, use simple language, and avoid jargon where possible. Every word should add value. If a sentence doesn't serve a purpose, cut it! 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 & 𝙀𝙮𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙩: Your body language speaks volumes. Use natural, open gestures to emphasize points and maintain eye contact to build rapport and demonstrate confidence. It creates a dynamic connection with your listeners. 𝙇𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙮 & 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮: Communication is a two-way street. Truly listen to questions, feedback, and even unspoken cues from your audience. This shows respect, helps you adapt your message in real-time, and fosters genuine dialogue. 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙉𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚 (𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚!): It's normal to feel nervous! Combat jitters with deep breathing exercises, power poses, and positive visualization. Focus on your message and your audience, not on your fear. A calm mind leads to a clear voice. 𝙑𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙏𝙤𝙣𝙚 & 𝙋𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙈𝙖𝙭𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙢 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩: A monotone voice can quickly lose an audience. Use vocal variety—changing your pitch, volume, and speaking speed—to emphasize key points, convey emotion, and keep listeners engaged and alert. 𝙏𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚: Humans are wired for stories. Weave in relevant anecdotes, case studies, or personal experiences to illustrate your points. Stories make your message memorable, relatable, and much more impactful. 𝘽𝙚 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙔𝙊𝙐: The most powerful speakers are genuine. Let your personality shine through. Don't try to be someone you're not. Your unique perspective and authentic self will connect with your audience on a deeper, more meaningful level. Ever noticed how some voices command attention, while others fade into the background? As an experienced coach and mentor guiding professionals and students, I have seen firsthand how poor voice modulation can undermine even the brightest ideas. Being clearly audible isn't just about volume. It's about using the right pitch to convey confidence and clarity. In one-on-one conversations, group discussions, or high-stakes meetings, speaking in a monotone or mismatched pitch often creates a negative impression, making you seem disengaged or unsure. The good news? You can overcome this with simple, actionable steps: Build Awareness: Record yourself speaking and listen back. Notice if your pitch is too high (sounding tense) or too low (muffling words). Aim for a natural mid-range that feels comfortable. Practice Breathing Techniques: Deep diaphragmatic breathing supports better pitch control. Inhale slowly through your nose, exhale through your mouth, and speak on the exhale for steadier tone. Vary Your Pitch Intentionally: Emphasize key words by slightly raising or lowering your pitch. This adds emphasis and keeps listeners engaged.....think of it as vocal highlighting! Warm Up Your Voice: Before important talks, hum gently or do simple vocal exercises like "sirens" (gliding from low to high pitch) to loosen up. Sounds funny but works like a charm! Seek Feedback: Practice in front of a trusted colleague or mentor. Their input can pinpoint adjustments faster than solo efforts. Mastering voice modulation transforms your communication skills, boosting your professional presence and leadership impact. Your voice is your superpower! #VoiceModulation #PublicSpeaking #CommunicationSkills #ProfessionalDevelopment #Leadership #Mentoring #PersonalGrowth
