    I'm a recruiter and hiring manager There is a huge trend I see that is ruining your first impression as an applicant Here's what it is: Generic professional summaries The typical professional summary I see will have the following: Results-driven Detail-oriented Great communicator Full of fluff and buzzwords The same boring professional summary Not noting anything specific to the job description Vague and overused language Here's a recent example from a candidate for a project manager role: Skilled project manager with a proven track record of success. Experienced in leading and managing complex projects from start to finish. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Seeking a challenging and rewarding project manager role where I can use my skills and experience to make a positive contribution. Yawn 🥱 You just ruined your chance at a great first impression I can tell you put zero effort into it Which means I'm going to put zero effort into reading the rest of your resume Want to catch my eye? 👀 Try this on for a professional summary formula -Use industry-specific keywords that showcase your soft/hard skills -Show quantitative results and measurable impact (it's okay if you list these in your bullet points in your resume later on, but bring them to my attention now) -Be specific, don't leave things open to interpretation -Tailor it to the job you are applying for (this takes less than 5 minutes) -Keep it at about 4 sentences maximum Here's how that candidate may do it differently: Project Manager with 10+ years of experience in the technology industry with a proven ability to lead and manage complex projects from start to finish. Expertise in Agile and Waterfall methodologies, as well as experience with various project management software. Oversaw implementation of a $600K e-commerce feature, achieving key milestones on time and under budget, resulting in a 27% increase in annual revenue. Aligned existing e-commerce framework with expansion initiatives, increasing site traffic by 30% and generating $200K+ in new revenue in just six months. Well, hello there...🔥🔥 Now you've got my attention This is a candidate I feel like I NEED to learn more about See the difference between the two? Your professional summary is your movie trailer Your appetizer or first bite into a meal How do you want people to feel about your meal or movie trailer?     "I am 63 years old, I think by far ageism is my key limiting factor." A client shared this with me last week. Because ageism + outdated hiring habits are very real. Resumes that quietly shout “I’m older” get filtered out before anyone sees your value. Thankfully, fixing this is simple once you know where to start. And unlike fighting the entire hiring system, this won’t cost you months of your life and every ounce of your confidence. Use this 3-step Age-Smart Resume Framework 👇 1️⃣ Trim your timeline Focus on the last 10–15 years. Older roles can be moved into a short “Earlier Career” or “Additional Experience” line. Tip: If a much older role is still essential, highlight the achievement, not the date. 2️⃣ Rewrite your summary Instead of opening with “Seasoned professional with 25+ years of experience”, lead with who you are and what you do now (e.g., “Operations Director who cuts costs and improves delivery speed for global manufacturers.”). Mistake to avoid: Putting “20+ / 30+ years of experience” in the first line of your resume or headline, it frames you by years, not impact. 3️⃣ Modernize education If your degree is more than 3 years old, you don’t need graduation years. Listing the degree, school, and location is enough. This keeps the focus on your qualifications, not the date you finished them. Quick example: Avoid → “B.A. in English, George Washington University, 1979” Use → “B.A. in English, George Washington University, Washington, D.C.” A quick example: I worked with a client in his early 60s who had a 4-page resume: - Every role since the late 80s - “30+ years of experience” in the first line - Graduation dates from decades ago - Brilliant background. But on paper, his resume was aging him before anyone got to his accomplishments. We: - Cut detailed experience to the last 15 years and turned older roles into a short “Earlier Career” section. - Replaced “Seasoned professional with 30+ years…” with a strong branding line focused on outcomes. - Removed old graduation dates and added recent upskilling and certifications near the top. Within two weeks, he started getting more interviews for roles. Same person. Same experience. Different first impression. 3 reasons why this works: Reason 1: It shifts the focus from age → relevance. You’re showing what matters most to employers now: recent wins, relevant skills, and current impact. Reason 2: It removes unnecessary age “signals.” Old dates, lengthy timelines, and "30+ years" language quietly trigger bias. When you edit those out, you’re not hiding your age; you’re removing distractions so your strengths get seen first. Reason 3: It positions you as experienced and current. A modern summary, focused timeline, and updated education section send a clear message: “I have depth of experience and I’m still growing, learning, and contributing.” You don’t have to erase your history. You just have to present it in a way that lets employers see your value before your age.

Here's how they approach resumes differently: Instead of "Managed 25 person team and improved processes that reduced costs…" They write: "Led 25-person team through digital transformation, reducing costs by 32% ($2.1M) while increasing output 40%" Instead of generic summaries that blend in… They craft something like: "Senior Engineer with 10 years building scalable systems. Reduced latency 60% for 50M users. Architected platforms at 3 unicorns…" The difference? Specificity. Metrics. Strategic thinking. Every bullet proves your business impact. Every line shows measurable results. Every word earns its place. While others submit the same resume 100 times, you'll customize it in minutes using these prompts. While they hope keywords match, you'll know exactly what hiring managers see. While they list responsibilities, you'll showcase transformational results.   • Don’t Just List Tasks—Showcase Your Value on Your CV Your CV should not be a list of the jobs you’ve held—it should demonstrate the unique impact you’ve made throughout your career. Yet, so many CVs end up being little more than task lists. Take a look at this. 👉 Instead of saying, “Managed social media accounts,” Say, “Increased social media engagement by 45% in six months through targeted campaigns.” See how one focuses on tasks and the other highlights results? Employers want to see the value you bring, not just what you were told to do. A Client’s Success Story: I recently worked with a client who was in marketing. Her CV initially read like a job description: “Created email campaigns” and “Collaborated with sales teams.” While this is great for using key works and incorporating the job description, it just doesn't have any impact. We reframed her experience to focus on results: ✅ “Launched email campaigns that boosted open rates by 25%, contributing to a 15% increase in sales leads.” ✅ “Developed cross-departmental strategies with sales, resulting in a streamlined funnel and increased conversion rates by 10%.” The result? Not only did her CV stand out, but it led to interviews where she could discuss her real contributions.     This is one of the most important things I’ve learned about resumes, and most don’t do it. Not doing this can hurt your chances of getting an interview 👇 Your resume 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 a description of what you are 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 for. Your resume 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 a collection of your 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 to the job you are applying for! Here's a simple example: A Project Manager's resume that describes what they are 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 for looks like this: - Delivered the project on time and within budget. - Communicated updates regularly to all stakeholders. This is a terrible way to "stand out" - In this example, every Project Manager is responsible for delivering projects on time and budget, and for communicating with stakeholders. In other words, there's nothing 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 about this person's resume. Your resume has to show: - Evidence that you have the experience they are looking for (Tailored resume) - Evidence of the value you bring to the team (Your past accomplishments) To write a resume that 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭, here’s what you should do 👇 Write 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, not what you were responsible for : - What did you do? - What was the impact? - How did you accomplish it? Use the “𝐗 + 𝐘 + 𝐙” formula to write accomplishments: “Accomplished [𝐗] as measured by [𝐘], by doing [𝐙]” 🛑 Instead of writing: “Delivered a project on time and budget” ✅ Write this: 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 [𝐗]: “Launched ____ project” 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 [𝐘]: “1 month ahead of schedule and increasing ROI by Z%” 𝐁𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 [𝐙]: “, by creating a new communication process that allowed low and medium risk tickets to be pre-appproved, reducing friction during development” Together X + Y + Z: “Launched ___ project 1 month ahead of schedule and increasing ROI by Z%, , by creating a new communication process that allowed low and medium risk tickets to be pre-appproved, reducing friction during development” 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 help you show that you have the experience companies look for in 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 of a project that had impact to customers, your team or the organization. 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 your 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 to the job you are applying to will increase your chances of getting an interview. Adding more colors, graphs and random keywords will not. A few extra tips as you go through your accomplishments: 1. Not every accomplishment will have a number (impact). It’s ok, try to have as many as possible. 2. Accomplishments tailored to the job you are applying to >>>> accomplishments you believe are the most important. 3.     I’ve revamped 216 resumes over the past 365 days. Most of the clients I worked with landed jobs in 4 months or less. Here’s what I’ve learned about what makes an executive resume WORK: 1) Keep it short. Even at the executive level, your resume should never be more than 2 pages. Anything longer, and you’ll lose the recruiter’s attention. 2) Clean design. Forget fancy designs, graphs, or color schemes. Nobody cares about that and it is super DISTRACTING for Recruiters. What matters is what you’ve done and the results you’ve delivered. 3) Tell a story. For each role, start with one bullet about your general scope (team size, portfolio, industries, etc.) and follow it up with 4–6 bullets that explain: ➜ What you did ➜ How you did it ➜ The results you achieved 4) Show your leadership. So many resumes focus only on tasks, and they forget to include leadership impact, talent development, or team management. If you’ve led people, OWN it. Recruiters want to see this! 5) Your resume is only the START. What you do after you apply (networking, reaching out to hiring managers, getting referrals) matters just as much as hitting “submit.” Here’s an example from one of my clients who just got hired at a Big 4 firm. She's worked in the data space for 20+ years, and her resume tells the story of her leadership AND results vs just listing out responsibilities and duties.     I just hung up the phone. Two hours and six minutes—that’s how long I spent (mostly listening) with the president of a manufacturing firm. At the end of our call, he paused and said something that’s stuck with me: "Sarah, I’ve got to be honest—this call went very differently than I expected. You asked some heavy-hitting questions… in a good way. You pushed me to think more deeply about my narrative and the true impact of my work." These are the moments that fuel me. Helping high-achieving leaders uncover the story behind the numbers… Reframing their accomplishments through the lens of value… And guiding them to step into their narrative with clarity and confidence. But as any good marketer knows—it’s never just about the metrics. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲. I recently had the privilege of diving into this topic with Cisco's Young Professional Employee Resource Group. These were high-potential professionals—coordinators, managers, early directors—already delivering strong results. The challenge wasn’t capability. It was translation. They were sitting on meaningful outcomes: • Driving cross-functional initiatives • Improving processes and efficiency • Influencing stakeholders without formal authority …but describing their work like task lists instead of leadership stories. We spent time unpacking that gap—how easily great work gets diluted when it’s framed as activity instead of impact. One of the things we discussed was my favorite formula for writing compelling, impact-driven resume bullet points: the RAS format — 👉 RAS: Result → Action → Situation Start with the outcome. -->Then explain what you did. And close with the context. It’s a simple shift—but it transforms a list of tasks into a narrative of leadership, influence, and results. Here are some examples of result-rich bullet points using the RAS formula: Saved $2M in potential fines by improving regulatory compliance. Steered multidisciplinary team on corrective action implementation project to transform company into best-in-class. Rescued distressed $1M key account, reversing NPS of -4 to +9 in 1 year, increasing client revenue 20%. Grew trend jewelry business by 75% after implementing a new merchandising strategy and optimizing store presentation. Delivered profitable growth 6 months ahead of 24-month schedule, expanding sales revenue as much as 94% YOY in a new country with limited resources.

    Recently, I reviewed a senior executive's resume and was shocked by several critical issues. It became clear that the resume was generated by a resume builder, which unfortunately led to significant shortcomings. Having worked with Senior Executives and helped them secure highly coveted leadership roles, I can confidently say that his resume had several critical flaws. This resume is unlikely to lead to interviews, networking calls, or any further opportunities. ➡ Critical Flaws in the Resume: - Lack of Context in the Summary: The summary was generic and failed to capture the executive’s unique career trajectory and expertise. - No Quantifiable Achievements: The resume lacked metrics to showcase the executive’s impact, making it hard to assess their contributions. - Lacked Value Proposition: There was no clear value proposition, missing an articulation of the executive's unique strengths and how they could benefit potential employers. - Not Aligned to the Target Job: The resume was not tailored to the executive’s target role, failing to highlight relevant skills and experiences. -One-Page Limitation: Constrained to a single page, the resume did not provide enough space to detail key achievements and qualifications, which is crucial for senior-level candidates. ✨ My recommendations for a Compelling Executive Resume: - Highlight the executive's unique career trajectory and expertise. - Use metrics to demonstrate impact. - Articulate unique strengths and problem-solving abilities. - Tailor the content to align with the target job. - Use a two-page format to detail key achievements and qualifications comprehensively. #executiveresume #jobsearch #executive
