Smoky Quartz from Mexico
2YT-RPEQuartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2
Aranzazú Mine, Concepción del Oro, Concepción del Oro Municipality, Zacatecas, MexicoDimensions: 8.5 cm x 3.2 cm x 2.5 cm
An interesting loose floater grouping of two smoky quartz crystals measuring 8.5 x 3.2 x 2.5 cm in size. Complete all around and in very good condition damage-wise. Earthy green malachite(?) is present upon some quartz faces. Ex Steve Pullman collection.
A46-C1WQuartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2 , Orthoclase K(AlSi3O8)
La Mancuerna, Tatatila, Tatatila Municipality, Veracruz, MexicoDimensions: 6.8 cm x 4.8 cm x 4.6 cm
Largest Crystal Size: 3 cm
Smoky quartz with orthoclase. The smoky quartz crystals form a pointed arc, which is very visually appealing.
2M5-G9EQuartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2 , Albite Na(AlSi3O8) , Magnetite Fe2+Fe3+2O4 , Orthoclase K(AlSi3O8)
Zeolite-Pegmatite Occurrence, La Mancuerna, Tatatila, Tatatila Municipality, Veracruz, MexicoDimensions: 3.6 cm x 2.4 cm x 2.5 cm
Smoky quartz with albite and magnetite on orthoclase matrix.
RJV-9AWQuartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2
Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Municipality, Sonora, MexicoDimensions: 35 mm x 28 mm
Dark smoky quartz crystal. Rolf Luetcke specimen and photo.
MC7-V52Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2 , Conichalcite CaCu(AsO4)(OH) , Malachite Cu2(CO3)(OH)2 , Quartz SiO2
Concepción del Oro, Concepción del Oro Municipality, Zacatecas, MexicoDimensions: 4.9 cm x 4.4 cm x 3.4 cm
4.9 x 4.4 x 3.4 cm. Smoky quartz is rare from the mines at Concepcion del Oro and combination specimens of this quality, more-so. The complete-all-around and pristine, sharply terminated, translucent, smoky quartz is preferentially coated with drusy quartz, tiny light green malachites with rich green conichalcite at the base. The matrix is almost totally coated with botryoidal conichalcite, which is dusted with tiny quartz crystals, some with a drusy quartz overcoat. Rare and very showy, probably old-time combination material from this historic locale.
AP7-PA1Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2 , Siderite FeCO3
Santa Eulalia Mining District, Aquiles Serdán Municipality, Chihuahua, MexicoDimensions: 5 cm x 4 cm x 3 cm
5x4x3 cm
From Bill Wall Collection
QJX-YN1Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2 , Calcite CaCO3 , Quartz (Var: Agate) SiO2
Las Choyas, Aldama Municipality, Chihuahua, MexicoDimensions: 11 cm x 6 cm x 9 cm
Complete geode, divided into two halves, of smoky quartz with a few calcite crystals surrounded by gray-blue zonated agate.
Finding: about 1974.
Mauro Rapazzini private collection.
LUH-E7TQuartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2 , Dravite NaMg3Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH) , Hematite Fe2O3 , Microcline K(AlSi3O8)
Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Municipality, Sonora, MexicoField of View: 14 mm
Dark smoky quartz with black, elongated crystals of dravite, black, platy hematite and white microcline. From one of the deposits near Santa Cruz. Rolf Luetcke specimen and photo.
4Q1-FRGQuartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2 , Orthoclase K(AlSi3O8) , Stilbite Subgroup M6-7[Al8-9Si27-28O72]·nH2O , Muscovite (Var: Illite) K0.65Al2.0[Al0.65Si3.35O10](OH)2 , Clinochlore Mg5Al(AlSi3O10)(OH)8
Zeolite-Pegmatite Occurrence, La Mancuerna, Tatatila, Tatatila Municipality, Veracruz, MexicoDimensions: 5.5 cm x 2.2 cm x 2.1 cm
Field of View: 25 mm
Largest Crystal Size: 14 mm
Smoky quartz with multiple internal pleochroic halos. Pleochroic halos in quartz are very common in this locality, but they rarely exceed two per crystal. Other minerals includepink orthoclase, yellow stilbite group, greenish illite, and dark green clinochlore.
E2D-KWTCalcite CaCO3 , Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) SiO2
Chihuahua, MexicoDimensions: 6.2 cm x 4.3 cm x 4.1 cm
6.2 x 4.3 x 4.1 cm. Sharp, well-formed, light pinkish colored rhombic crystals of calcite with smoky quartz from an undisclosed locality in Chihuahua (most likely Naica, but possibly from Santa Eulalia). The surface of the crystals is smooth and well-formed, and some of the edges even have beautiful beveled modifications. The somewhat pearly interior has a translucent light pink hue when backlit. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#6424). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
